The Washington Commanders' 2024 preseason kicked off with a road matchup against the New York Jets, and while the team ultimately fell 20-17, the game wasn't without highlights, especially for Commanders' rookie quarterback, Jayden Daniels.

Daniels, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, was a standout in his first NFL game. He showed glimpses of the potential that led to his high draft position, showcasing his arm strength, athleticism, and command of the offense in his lone series of play. Daniels even paid homage to Commanders legend Doug Williams by wearing a throwback Williams jersey.

Commanders' Offense Starts Strong

Daniels and most of the Commanders' projected starters on offense played just the opening series against Jets backups, but the young quarterback was impressive in those few snaps. He connected with Dyami Brown for a 42-yard gain on a third-and-six, showcasing his ability to make big plays downfield. On the next play, he faked a handoff and ran for a touchdown, giving the Commanders a 7-0 lead with 8:39 left in the first quarter.

Daniels' Strong First Impression

Coach Dan Quinn was impressed with Daniels' poise and playmaking ability in his debut, highlighting how Daniels took control of the offense and made a bold play by calling an audible. "I think he wanted to ask for forgiveness and not permission,” Quinn said. “And then (he) throws an absolute dime to Dyami over the top. ... He went ahead and buzzed the tower. It was a really cool play.”

Jets' Defense Shows Promise

While Daniels shined, the Jets' defense, particularly the young players, showcased their potential. Rookie linebacker Jimmy Ciarlo, an undrafted free agent, had a strong game with two tackles for loss and a sack, showing a knack for disrupting plays. Another standout was undrafted free agent defensive lineman Leonard Taylor III, who also recorded two tackles for loss, demonstrating his ability to get pressure on the quarterback.

Backup Quarterbacks Deliver for Jets

Despite the loss of their starting quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, who sat out the game as a precaution, the Jets' backup quarterbacks, Andrew Peasley and Adrian Martinez, stepped up in their first preseason game. Peasley threw for a touchdown and Martinez led the Jets' late-game rally that culminated in Austin Seibert's game-winning field goal with 21 seconds remaining. The Jets' coaching staff was pleased with the performances of the backup quarterbacks, praising their composure and ability to execute the offense.

Preseason Debut of the Jets' Rookie Class

The game also marked the preseason debut of the Jets' 2024 draft class. Several players, including running backs Braelon Allen and Isaiah Davis, wide receiver Malachi Corley, and cornerback Qwan'tez Stiggers, made notable contributions. Allen, a fourth-round pick, showed his power and explosiveness in the run game, racking up 45 yards on his first three carries. Davis, a fifth-round pick, showcased his versatility by catching a 24-yard pass and adding 33 receiving yards. Corley, a third-round pick, caught four passes for 28 yards, demonstrating his ability to get open and make tough catches.

A Look Ahead

The Washington Commanders will continue their preseason schedule with a road matchup against the Miami Dolphins on August 17th. The Jets will face the Carolina Panthers on the same day. Both teams will use these preseason games to further evaluate their players, refine their strategies, and build momentum for the regular season.

A Game of Young Talent

The Commanders and Jets' preseason opener was a testament to the potential of young players, as both teams featured several rookies who made significant contributions. The game was a showcase of young talent and the exciting future of the NFL. Daniels' strong showing gives the Commanders optimism for the upcoming season, while the Jets' backup quarterbacks and rookie class showed they have the ability to contribute in the future.
