Juventus is off to one of the most bizarre starts to a soccer season that you’ll ever see. The Old Lady has two wins and two draws from its first four matches, but things get funky when you look at the goal difference. Juve has scored six goals and allowed none, meaning they’ve played two nil-nil draws already, and have seen a total of 5.3 expected goals (xGF + xGA) in their four matches. Thiago Motta’s side is taking low-event to a whole new level. We’ll see if Juventus will bring this identity into their Champions League opener against PSV Eindhoven on Tuesday. Adding even more intrigue to Juve’s funky start to the season is the fact that they were shot of a cannon in their first two matches. The Old Lady stomped Como, 3-0, in their opener and then overwhelmed Hellas Veronas by the same scoreline a week later. But things came to a screeching halt against Roma in a drab nil-nil draw and it didn’t get any more exciting against Empoli on Saturday. Juventus created just 1.4 expected goals in their last two contests, but they conceded just 0.8, so they’re certainly doing a lot right in their own half.
Eindhoven, meanwhile, are off to a very different start in the Eredivisie. Although it is a much weaker league compared to Serie A, winning your first five matches by an aggregate scoreline of 20-3 is downright impressive. Like a lot of the clubs that succeed in the Netherlands, Eindhoven want to introduce pace and chaos to the game and keep things moving at all times. That is not how Juve want their matches to play out. This contrast of styles should set up for a really interesting contest. Juve’s defensive work under Thiago Motta could turn it into a contender in the Champions League, but it’s hard to back them with their offense sputtering at the moment. As for Eindhoven, they check plenty of boxes you look for in a live underdog in the Champions League, but the quality of competition they’ve faced in the Eredivisie does leave a lot to be desired. Throw in the fact that this kind of stylistic matchup — where two very different philosophies meet — often begins with a feeling-out process and you’ve got yourself all the makings for a very ugly first half of football.

Juventus host PSV on their return to the Champions League and it’ll be interesting to see how they fare. The Old Lady turned to Thiago Motta in the summer and took the opportunity to overhaul their squad. They have backed the new manager with around £150m in the transfer market and the early signs are promising. The possession-based style is a far cry from how Juventus operate under Massimo Allegri.
Juve are unbeaten in four matches in Serie A, but they have drawn their last two matches. They aren’t the most potent attacking force, but their ability to control a game should serve them well in the Champions League. PSV have made the perfect start to their domestic season. Their 2-0 win over NAC Breda at the weekend made it five wins from five and they have a goal difference of +17. They are two points ahead of AZ Alkmaar in the Eredivisie, but competing in Europe will prove to be a tougher task.
Peter Bosz’s side was beaten by Borussia Dortmund in the round of 16 last season. They could prove to be a banana skin for any of the top teams in the group stage and will harbour ambitions of reaching the last 16 once again. Juventus fans have likely enjoyed the early weeks of the season. Although it hasn't been plain sailing, there is reason for optimism. Thiago Motta hasn’t had long to implement his style, but the team appeared solid in the early stages of his tenure. The Old Lady have lost just one home game since the start of last season. Over that period, they have scored 1.21 more goals per game than they’ve conceded. The fans grew tired of Allegri’s football, and there is a longing for a more expansive approach. That may take time, but Juventus have retained their defensive solidity in the early stages of this season.
PSV struggled on the road in the Champions League last season. They managed just two wins in their six away games and conceded an average of two goals per game. Juventus and PSV get their Champions League campaigns under way on Tuesday night. With 36 Serie A titles to their name, Juventus are by far and away the most successful side in Italian football history. Yet given their domestic achievements, the Bianconeri have a worse record in the Champions League than you might expect. Indeed, Juve have lifted the trophy on only two occasions - and not at all since 1996.
There have been plenty of near-misses along the way. Juventus have finished as runners-up in the continent’s premier competition on no fewer than seven occasions. No other team has lost as many finals. Under Max Allegri, Juventus were beaten in the showpiece match in both 2015 and 2017. Since back-to-back quarter-final appearances in 2017/18 and 2018/19, the Italian giants have not even reached the latter stages of the tournament. That is something Juventus are desperate to rectify, but this is likely to be a transition season under Thiago Motta. No one is really expecting the Old Lady to make a major impact in Europe. Still, the draw could have been much tougher. Remember, there is no longer a group stage in the Champions League.
The new-look league phase involves eight fixtures per team and one big league table. A top-eight finish would bring a last-16 berth, while the sides ranked between ninth and 24th will contest the knockout stage play-offs. Juventus have been drawn to face Manchester City, but their other opponents - including Aston Villa, RB Leipzig, Stuttgart and Benfica - are beatable. Even the game against City takes place in Turin rather than Manchester in a welcome development for Thiago Motta and co. Yet none of those opponents will be overly fearful of this version of Juventus either. That includes PSV, who will arrive in Italy with the intention of collecting all three points on matchday one. This does not immediately look like a standout fixture, but in our judgement it might actually be one of the more intriguing encounters taking place this week. If you are free at 5.45pm on Tuesday, we recommend tuning in. Juventus and PSV are both seeking a winning start to their Champions League campaigns. After back-to-back victories 3-0 over Como and Hellas Verona, Juventus have had their progress checked either side of the international break.
A pair of 0-0 draws with Roma and Empoli represent the first stumbling block for Thiago Motta, who replaced Allegri over the summer. The former Bologna boss is still searching for the right balance at his new club. PSV have no such issues. They stormed to the Eredivisie title under Peter Bosz last season and have continued in the same vein this time around. PSV have won each of their five league outings in 2024/25 to set the pace in the Netherlands. Remarkably, they have already scored 20 goals while conceding only three. Bosz’s side will arrive in Turin with genuine belief that they can go back home with all three points. Juventus will give as they have got, but PSV are definitely capable of avoiding defeat.
One thing is for sure: PSV will not arrive at the Allianz Stadium with the intention of sitting deep and with the ambition of stealing a couple of chances on the counter-attack or from set-pieces. PSV are an extremely attacking team under their manager, who has a mixed record throughout his career but is doing a wonderful job in Eindhoven. Juventus have struggled for goals of late, but they are yet to concede in Serie A under Thiago Motta. However, their backline will be tested throughout this encounter, which is the first ever between these two clubs. The danger for PSV is that by opening the game up, they could be undone by an opponent that is much stronger than RKC Waalwijk, Heracles, Almere City, Go Ahead Eagles and NEC, the teams they have faced in the Eredivisie so far this season. Either way, it would be a huge surprise if Juventus were involved in another 0-0 on Tuesday. Juventus kick off their return to the Champions League by hosting Eredivisie champions PSV Eindhoven on Tuesday evening. Thiago Motta's reign as Juventus coach got off to a bright start with successive 3-0 Serie A victories, but back-to-back goalless draws since show that there's still plenty of work to be done in Turin. The Old Lady haven't won a European trophy since the turn of the century and may harbour slim hopes of upsetting the odds in this year's competition.
Heading into the Champions League off the back claiming a record number of points in an Eredivisie season, PSV have been handed a challenging start to their journey in this year's expanded competition. However, they are unbeaten across 90 minutes since late March and have scored 20 goals in five victories at the start of 2024/25. Here is 90min's guide to Juventus vs PSV. This is the first competitive fixture between Juventus and PSV. Juventus have a relatively clean bill of health for their clash with PSV midweek, although Francisco Conceicao is guaranteed to be absent with a muscle injury. Striker Arkadiusz Milik is also a doubt having missed the weekend draw with Empoli. Motta is likely to field a similar lineup to the one that could only secure a point on Saturday, although some rotation may be required to keep the squad fresh for PSV's visit. Timothy Weah could replace Nicolas Gonzalez and Michele Di Gregorio could replace Mattia Perin in goal.
Juventus predicted lineup vs PSV Eindhoven (4-2-3-1): Di Gregorio; Kalulu, Gatti, Bremer, Cambiaso; Locatelli, Luiz; Weah, Koopmeiners, Yildiz; Vlahovic. PSV also have most of their first-teamers at their disposal, although Mexican winger Hirving Lozano will miss out with a muscle injury. Sergino Dest and Armando Obispo are both doubts after missing the weekend's victory over NEC Nijmegen. PSV did well to retain some of their brightest starts over the summer period, including Belgian attacker Johan Bakayoko. He was linked with a Premier League move but has already been instrumental with two goals for the Eindhoven outfit this season. PSV Eindhoven predicted lineup vs Juventus (4-3-3): Benitez; Ledezma, Flamingo, Boscagli, Dams; Til, Schouten, Veerman; Bakayoko, De Jong, Tillman.
After a bright start to the season, Juventus have stumbled to successive goalless draws. Their issues breaking down opposition in recent matches should be helped this Tuesday by Peter Bosz's and PSV's particularly attacking style. PSV have been in blistering form again this season and will have no inferiority complex heading to Turin. They have won all five of their Eredivisie games at a canter this season and will be eager to take advantage of a Juventus side in transition.
