Katy Perry is roaring again after dropping her latest single Lifetimes yesterday. And as she prepares for the release of her new dance-inspired album 143 next month, we can report the Firework singer is lining up something very special to kick-start her comeback.

Insiders have revealed Katy is in advanced talks to perform at the MTV Video Music Awards on September 10, which takes place ten days before 143 drops. It will be the first time Katy has performed at the ceremony since 2019, and she has picked up five of the prized MTV Moonmen gongs throughout her career. On top of that, it will be the first time she has performed any of her new material since returning to the music scene earlier this summer.

A source said: “Katy is currently deep in talks to make her big return to the VMAs stage. Details are still being ironed out but she’s a huge star and bosses are determined to lock in the deal. The last time Katy performed on the show was in 2019, so it is set to be a huge moment. She’s already been travelling the world to promote her new single but next month is set to be even busier for her. Katy is one of the world’s biggest pop superstars and this new record and a performance at the VMAs would cement that.”

The awards show is known in showbiz circles as one of the wildest music ceremonies and has created countless viral moments. They have ranged from the infamous Miley Cyrus’ twerking routine in 2013 to Lady Gaga bleeding to death on stage “in the name of art” at the 2009 ceremony. And who could forget fallen rapper Kanye West, now known as Ye, storming the stage the same year as Taylor Swift picked up the gong for Video of the Year. You name it, it probably happened at the VMAs.

This year’s awards night will take place on September 10 at UBS Arena, just outside New York. Taylor leads this year’s nominations with ten nods, closely followed by her former collaborator Post Malone, who has nine. Flying the flag for us Brits is Dua Lipa. who has three nominations.

Katy has already been announced to headline massive Brazilian festival Rock In Rio on the day her album is released, September 20. When we caught up with her last month, she told us she couldn’t think of a better place to launch her record. She will also headline the Toyota AFL Grand Final — that’s Aussie rules football to us Poms —in Oz on September 28. Just reading through Katy’s schedule makes me want to have a nap. But I think it’s fair to say she is looking, feeling and sounding better than ever before. This is Katy’s year — and it’s going to go off!

Katy Perry's Comeback: From American Idol to the VMAs

Back when Katy Perry announced her exit from American Idol, fans wondered about her future in the music industry as she looked to return to the studio. And wasting no time, the hitmaker is already back on the airwaves with new songs like “Lifetimes” and “Woman’s World.” And adding to those hit songs, Perry will release her seventh studio album, 143, on September 20th. But besides releasing new music and expanding her discography, the pop star is reportedly in talks to perform at the MTV Video Music Awards.

Although spending more than 20 years in the music industry, if Perry performed at the VMAs on September 10th, it would mark her first performance since leaving American Idol. It will also mark the first glimpse of her new music in a live setting. Perry has not performed at the VMAs since 2019. Sharing the details surrounding the rumors, a source told The Sun, “Katy is currently deep in talks to make her big return to the VMAs stage. Details are still being ironed out but she’s a huge star and bosses are determined to lock in the deal.”

A Star's Return: Perry's History with the VMAs

While returning to the stage, Perry shared a past with the VMAs as the awards not only honored her but welcomed her to the stage. The source continued to praise the singer, revealing how hard Perry worked over the summer to relaunch her music career. “She’s already been traveling the world to promote her new single but next month is set to be even busier for her. Katy is one of the world’s biggest pop superstars and this new record and a performance at the VMAs would cement that.”

The Meaning Behind 143: Katy Perry's New Album

With her upcoming album, 143, just a few weeks away from release, Perry sat down with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1 to discuss her return to music. While the title comes wrapped in mystery, the singer decided to reveal her inspiration. “It’s my angel number. It’s my symbol, it’s my sign. A couple years ago, we were going through a little bit of a hard time medically in our family, and it was a little bit scary, and I started seeing 143 in many different ways, not just on the phone.”

Although claiming the number was a like a “code for ‘I love you”, Perry admitted, “I really believe it was my angels, my guides, saying, ‘I love you. We got you. We’re going to protect you. You’re exactly where you’re meant to be. You’re on the path.’”

A Queen's Return: Katy Perry's Reign

With Perry back with her new album, a performance at the MTV Video Music Awards could be the perfect return from the “Queen of Camp.”
