Kelowna Liquor Store Workers to Strike This Weekend: Fight for Fair Wages Amid Inflation

Unionized workers at a Kelowna liquor store will begin a strike on Saturday, Sept. 14. Employees at Armstrong Regional Cooperative (ARC) Liquor in Guisachan Village are taking action after negotiations ended with a final offer from ARC Liquor on Aug 29. Workers filed a 72-hour strike notice with the BC Labour Relations Board on Sept. 11.

The union claims that the bargaining process initially appeared promising, with employees holding out hope for a positive outcome. However, discussions ultimately collapsed over monetary concerns. According to a media release from Service Employees International Union (SEIU) 2, the company's final offer fell short of meeting the workers' demands for a dignified wage that reflects the rising cost of living in Kelowna.

The Cost of Living Crisis

The strike highlights the increasing financial strain faced by workers in Kelowna. Inflation has been a major issue in Canada, impacting the purchasing power of Canadians across the country. Workers at ARC Liquor are seeking a wage increase to keep pace with inflation and ensure that they can continue to afford basic necessities in Kelowna.

“We’re looking for a wage increase because the cost of living in Kelowna is getting higher and higher as inflation rises,” said Julia Scott, an employee of the store for four years. “The co-op is doing nothing to compensate us, and we need to be able to pay our rent,”

Community Rally in Support of Striking Workers

The strike is expected to begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, with workers picketing in front of the store. The union is calling on the community to join them at 12 p.m. for a rally in support of their efforts. The community rally is a testament to the strength of collective bargaining and the importance of community solidarity in times of struggle.

A Unionized Workforce

The workers at ARC Liquor unionized in May, demonstrating their commitment to advocating for their rights and working conditions. This unionization represents a growing trend among workers in various sectors seeking to improve their wages and benefits through collective action.

SEIU Local 2 represents 20,000 workers across Canada, including thousands in the alcohol and beverage industry. Some of the organizations they represent include Calona Vineyards, Mission Hill Winery, and Okanagan Spring Brewery.

The Impact of the Strike

The strike could have a significant impact on the operations of the liquor store. It remains unclear whether the store will remain open during the strike, as ARC Liquor does have one manager who is not part of the union and could potentially keep the store operating. However, the strike is likely to disrupt normal operations and could lead to a decrease in sales.

Negotiations Continue

Despite the strike notice, there is still hope for an agreement to be reached before the weekend. The union has expressed a desire to reach a resolution and avoid a strike.

“Nobody wants to go on strike, of course,” said Steve Manning, an organizer with SEIU Local 2. However, he emphasized that the union remains committed to securing a fair wage increase for their members.

A Call for Community Support

The strike is a reminder of the importance of supporting workers who are fighting for fair wages and working conditions. The community's support for the striking workers can send a powerful message to ARC Liquor and encourage them to reach a fair agreement.

The strike also highlights the challenges faced by workers in a rapidly changing economy, where inflation and the cost of living are putting pressure on wages and making it difficult for workers to make ends meet.

This strike is a testament to the power of collective action and the importance of fighting for a fair deal in the workplace. It serves as a reminder that workers must stand together to ensure that they are treated fairly and with dignity in the workplace.
