Liverpool host Bournemouth in the Premier League on Saturday as the Reds look to respond to a shock setback last time out. Arne Slot suffered his first defeat as Liverpool manager as Nottingham Forest earned an upset win at Anfield, securing their first victory over the Reds on Merseyside since 1969 courtesy of Callum Hudson-Odoi’s goal. Liverpool regrouped to open their Champions League campaign with a 3-1 win at AC Milan, recovering from a goal down in the San Siro to earn three points. Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate were each on target from set-pieces, before Dominik Szoboszlai netted his first of the season to seal the win. Slot will be keen to continue that momentum against a Bournemouth side who have already proven awkward opposition for Newcastle and Chelsea this season. The Cherries also made history on their last visit to Merseyside, after a record-breaking comeback win at Everton. Two goals down with just three minutes of normal time remaining, Andoni Iraola’s side secured a stunning turnaround to take the points at Goodison Park. Slot has confirmed that first-choice goalkeeper Alisson Becker is a doubt to face Bournemouth in Saturday’s Premier League game because of a muscle issue. The Brazil international has featured in all five fixtures so far but looks unlikely to take his place this weekend, with Caoimhin Kelleher waiting in the wings to deputise. The Republic of Ireland international was vocal in his desire for more minutes during September’s international break and will hope to take his chance. The Reds are without Harvey Elliott, who fractured his foot during the international break. The issue, picked up during a training camp for England’s u-21 side, will sideline the 21-year-old for at least a month. Slot faces a selection headache at left-wing with Cody Gakpo stating his case for more involvement with an impressive performance at AC Milan. Brought into the side for his first start of the campaign, Gakpo was Liverpool’s standout name at the San Siro. However, Luis Diaz has four goal involvements (3G and 1A) in four Premier League appearances. Elsewhere, Darwin Nunez could make his first start of the season. Limited to cameo appearances so far, Slot said the Uruguayan is approaching full fitness but must improve. “There’s a lot of confidence in him, Slot said at his pre-match press conference. “But there are two players for that position and I could even come up with more who could play in that position – he is in competition with Diogo who has done really well. But many games have to be played and there will be enough time to judge Darwin: if he improves and how he improves and if he can do special things for the club.” Predicted Liverpool XI (4-3-3): Kelleher; Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson; Gravenberch, Mac Allister, Szoboszlai; Salah, Diaz, Nunez. Liverpool take on Bournemouth at Anfield on Saturday 21st September 2024. Kick-off on Merseyside is 15:00 BST. The game will not be broadcast live to a UK audience. Details of other rights holders can be found here. Liverpool could today be without goalkeeper Alisson for their Premier League clash with Bournemouth. The Brazilian international is struggling with a minor muscle complaint and could miss the game at Anfield as a result. Slot, meanwhile, has urged caution in regards to Federico Chiesa. The Italian international made a brief debut for the club during Tuesday night’s 3-1 win over AC Milan in the Champions League and is in contention to make his Premier League bow against Bournemouth this weekend. Still, having barely featured since Italy’s Euro 2024 campaign, Chiesa will need to build up his fitness. “Federico Chiesa will be a big asset for us,” said the Reds boss. “That's clear, that's what we knew before we signed him “He needs playing minutes now but he has competition from some good wingers as well.” Slot’s side host the Cherries at Anfield looking to bounce back domestically after a surprise 1-0 defeat at home to Nottingham Forest last time out. At this stage, Harvey Elliott is believed to be the only enforced injury absence having sustained a fractured foot earlier this month. Liverpool predicted XI: Kelleher; Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson; Mac Allister, Gravenberch; Salah, Szoboszlai, Gakpo, Jota Doubts: Alisson Injured: Elliott Time and date: 3pm BST today on Saturday 21 September, 2024 Venue: Anfield TV channel and live stream: Not available in the UK Live coverage: Follow all the updates with our Standard Sport live blog. Arne Slot hails Liverpool for response to 'unbelievable' setback with dominant win over AC Milan Liverpool 'deeply saddened' after fan dies in accident before AC Milan Champions League tie Liverpool is back in Premier League action later today, and will be aiming to pick up where they left off on their European exploits during the week as they take on Bournemouth. The Reds bounced straight back from last weekend's surprise defeat to Nottingham Forest to get their Champions League campaign off to the perfect start with a win at AC Milan on Tuesday. Now, Arne Slot's side will be aiming to get back to winning ways domestically as Andoni Iraola brings his side to Anfield. Liverpool's build-up to the game though has been hit by an injury to Alisson Becker, with the goalkeeper looking unlikely to feature this afternoon. The Brazilian missed training on Friday as he continues to suffer from a minor injury picked up before the midweek trip to Italy. Caoimhin Kelleher looks set to deputize for him today, and Slot will be hoping that's the only enforced change he has to make. We'll bring you all the team news and build-up to today's game, as well as the action as it happens. Follow our live blog below for all the latest Liverpool news as we build up to the Saturday visit to Anfield of Bournemouth. Arne Slot has urged the Anfield crowd to lift his side today after last week's surprise defeat to Nottingham Forest. The atmosphere inside the iconic ground was criticized by some last weekend, although Slot feels his side needs to take responsibility for any lack of enthusiasm: My only protestation was about how we played. We as a team have to be aware that fans need something to get behind the team and I don't think we did that enough. If we don't show up enough maybe that can help us if it looks like it might not be our day, but I like to look at ourselves - if we do better than the fans will enjoy what they see. It starts with us doing better tomorrow. But maybe the fans can give us an extra push. We're just three hours away from kick-off at Anfield, with the Reds looking to pick up where they left off in Milan in midweek. It's another 3pm kick-off for Liverpool today, which means the game will not be shown live on TV for fans in the UK. Supporters in the US though will be able to watch all the action as it happens. Find out how you can watch today's game right here. Team news will be confirmed in just over a couple of hours, although there are already some hints doing the rounds on social media. A number of fans are suggesting that Diogo Jota is set to start again this afternoon for Liverpool, meaning Darwin Nunez will be left waiting for his first start of the season. We'll bring you the confirmed team news when it goes live later. Arne Slot has insisted Liverpool has 'moved on' from Martin Zubimendi, despite suggestions this week that the Real Sociedad midfielder may regret turning down a transfer to Anfield. Claims that Zubimendi is considering making a U-turn and has asked Liverpool to go in for him again have been dismissed anyway, but now looks to have definitively ruled out another move for the midfielder: If I could have bought him (Zubimendi) then maybe I could have rotated a bit more and you guys (the media) would be a lot more happy about it! But there is no point talking about Zubimendi anymore because he stayed with Real Sociedad and we've moved on and we are really happy with Ryan [Gravenberch]. With the games coming thick and fast now for Liverpool, there will no doubt be some temptation from Arne Slot to make wholesale changes to his side. The Reds boss though can wait until the Carabao Cup tie against West Ham in midweek to make those changes, and he should stick to a fairly settled side against Bournemouth today. Matt Addison has predicted what today's team will look like, with just two changes made from the win over AC Milan, including of course Caoimhin Kelleher replacing the injured Alisson Becker. While Alisson is a doubt for today's game, Liverpool will also be without Harvey Elliott, with the midfielder out until late October with a fractured foot. It's as you were with the rest of the squad, with Kostas Tsimikas and Cody Gakpo looking to keep their places in the starting XI after starting the win at AC Milan. Federico Chiesa, meanwhile, will be aiming to make his Premier League debut after coming off the bench at the San Siro. Darwin Nunez will be hoping for some more minutes, with the Uruguayan still not having started a game this season. Goalkeepers: Caoimhin Kelleher, Vitezslav Jaros Defenders: Trent Alexander-Arnold, Conor Bradley, Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Jarell Quansah, Joe Gomez, Andy Robertson, Kostas Tsimikas Midfielders: Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo, Curtis Jones, Tyler Morton Forwards: Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota, Mohamed Salah, Federico Chiesa Injury doubts: Alisson Becker Players who are injured: Harvey Elliott It's looking unlikely we'll see Alisson Becker in action today. Arne Slot revealed in his press conference on Friday that the goalkeeper was a major doubt after missing training following the win in Milan in midweek. That press conference was held before the final training session on Friday, but the Brazilian was absent for that as well, all but confirming that he'll miss today's game. It's likely then that we'll see Caoimhin Kelleher deputizing for him today, whil Vitezslav Jaros will step up to the bench. Good morning Reds, and welcome to our live updates as we bring you all the build-up ahead of today's game against Bournemouth! Liverpool will be aiming to make amends for last weekend's surprise defeat at the hands of Nottingham Forest at Anfield, having returned to winning ways at AC Milan during the week. We'll bring you all the latest team news and more before kick-off later, when you can follow all the action with us as it happens. Read Arne Slot’s programme notes for Liverpool’s match against AFC Bournemouth today in full… Before I look ahead to today’s game, I want to look back at the last one. Winning at a stadium like San Siro against a team with the history and stature of AC Milan is something that everyone associated with Liverpool FC should be proud of. Sometimes it can be easy to take these kind of results for granted but we never should. For every single player, staff member and supporter who contributed I hope you were able to enjoy the moment because it was a special one. For the team, the priority was to bounce back from a really disappointing result against Nottingham Forest a few days earlier. It was inevitable that we would have that defeat in our heads a little bit, especially after going a goal down so early, but the performance showed resilience, quality and character and this is why we were able to get an important win. I said afterwards that the whole team played well and the reason for this is the hard work that the players put in. Responding to a setback is one of those things that is always easier said than done but it definitely becomes less hard when everyone pulls together with a focus on putting things right and this is exactly what happened. The key now is to build on what we have done so far. We cannot change the loss to Forest but we can continue to learn from it and keep on improving. This will be our objective again today because, just like Forest one week ago, we know full well that Bournemouth will have their own ambitions of getting a positive result at Anfield. Of course, I would like to welcome Andoni Iraola, his staff and the players and supporters of Bournemouth to the stadium. Bournemouth’s story in recent years is one that it is very hard not to like and respect. They more than punch their weight in the Premier League and have a reputation for playing good football which is very much deserved. So we know what to expect and this is another tough challenge against an opponent with quality and experience. We did not arrive back from Milan until the early hours of Wednesday morning, but by the time kick-off arrives our aim is to be ready to go again because we know another good performance will be required. I mentioned earlier how pleased I was with the players in midweek and the same goes for our fans. During the game itself I was totally focused on what was happening on the pitch so it was only afterwards that I was able to fully appreciate the impact that our supporters had on the stadium. Seeing so many of you up in the gods, spread across an entire stand, was a wonderful thing and the support that we received throughout the game was incredible. Even though you were so heavily outnumbered you really made yourselves heard and this definitely helped our performance. We can only ever appreciate this kind of support, especially when it happens in a foreign country meaning our fans have to travel a long way to give us their backing. This is why everyone at the club was so saddened by the tragic loss of Philip Dooley while we were in Italy. Liverpool is a special club and one of the main reasons for this is our supporters, so to lose one of them in circumstances like this is incredibly sad. It goes without saying that our sympathies and our thoughts are with Philip’s family and friends. You’ll Never Walk Alone, Arne Liverpool host Bournemouth in the Premier League this weekend, with Alisson a major doubt after picking up an injury problem. The Reds won 3-1 at AC Milan in the Champions League in midweek, but focus is now back on league form. Last weekend’s abject 1-0 loss at home to Nottingham Forest still stings and Arne Slot will know the importance of a win against Bournemouth. Here’s who is available and who is set to miss out against Bournemouth: In terms of injuries, Slot confirmed Alisson is a shock doubt for Saturday’s game, having suffered a hamstring issue and failed to train on Friday. This will be of huge concern to anyone of a Liverpool persuasion, considering the Brazilian missed months of last season, too. Harvey Elliott‘s recovery from a fractured foot continues as he remains the only confirmed long-term absentee for the Reds. Another headache that Slot will have ahead of the visit of Bournemouth is selection, with a plethora of options available. Andy Robertson and Luis Diaz were rested in Milan and both will likely return to Liverpool’s starting lineup, coming in for Kostas Tsimikas and Cody Gakpo. The latter was excellent at the San Siro, however, so it won’t be easy for Slot to leave out his compatriot. Curtis Jones will hope for his first start of the season, should Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister or Dominik Szoboszlai need a breather. Should Alisson miss out, as looks likely, Caoimhin Kelleher will once again fill in. Goalkeepers: Alisson*, Kelleher, Jaros, Davies Defenders: Van Dijk, Quansah, Konate, Gomez, Alexander-Arnold, Robertson, Bradley, Tsimikas Midfielders: Mac Allister, Szoboszlai, Endo, Gravenberch, Jones, Morton, Nyoni Forwards: Salah, Jota, Nunez, Diaz, Gakpo, Chiesa *In doubt Get our free app © Copyright This Is Anfield 2024
