A new-parent couple in Iroquois Falls, northeast of Timmins, Ontario, became millionaires after winning $70 million in the August 20 Lotto Max draw. Kyle Murray, who was buying his first lottery ticket, discovered the news after his partner, Jennifer Stuart-Flynn, checked their winning ticket on the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) app.
The adventure began when Murray went to pick up his mother at the Timmins airport so she could meet her new grandchild.
Murray had purchased the ticket on impulse and stuck it on the refrigerator, almost forgetting about it until the next day, he told the OLG.
It was his partner who took the initiative to check their ticket on the OLG app.
Stuart-Flynn remembers taking a deep breath, closing the app, and then reopening it to check again. “Kyle asked me, 'What? Did we win?' and I said, 'I think so.' ”
For Stuart-Flynn, this win represents much more than just a financial victory.
She wants to buy a house for her sister, because “she deserves it so much.”
The thought that her children will never have to worry about money deeply moves her. “I realize that my children will have a very different life than mine,” she added.
For his part, Murray plans to realize a more rustic dream: buy some land and build a small farm to offer their children a place where they will always want to return.
“We’ve been through some tough times as a family in recent years,” he said, adding that despite their best efforts to improve their situation, “nothing had gotten us to where we are today.”
