The M6 motorway in Lancashire has been closed in both directions after a serious collision involving an overturned lorry, causing major disruption to traffic and lengthy delays. The incident occurred between junctions 27 (Shevington) and 28 (Leyland) at approximately 1.30pm on Friday, August 30, 2024.
The motorway was subsequently closed in both directions as emergency services rushed to the scene. An air ambulance was also deployed to assist in the response. Lancashire Police confirmed that the crash involved a HGV, a campervan and a car. Seven people were injured in the accident, but their injuries are not considered life-threatening.
M6 Closure Causes Significant Disruption
The M6 closure has caused significant disruption to traffic flow, leading to severe delays in both directions. Traffic maps show severe delays building on the M6, with congestion also growing on the M61 northbound and M55 eastbound. The accident has caused tailbacks for those heading to the Blackpool Illuminations switch-on tonight.
According to the AA, congestion is backing up to junction 32 (Broughton) on the M6 southbound, and junction 25 (Bryn) on the M6 northbound. National Highways has urged motorists to allow extra journey time or delay their plans.
Diversions in Place Due to M6 Closure
Diversions have been put in place to assist drivers affected by the closure. National Highways has detailed a number of diversion routes for people driving on the M6. For northbound drivers, they are advised to follow the Hollow Diamond diversion symbol on road signs. For southbound drivers, they should follow the route marked with a hollow square symbol on local road signs.
Recovery Efforts Underway
National Highways said the southbound carriageway is now in the process of being reopened, but the northbound carriageway is expected to remain closed for several hours. The incident has caused substantial damage to the central barrier, and the lorry has shed its load. The recovery of the lorry and its load, as well as the clean-up of a fuel spill, are contributing to the lengthy closure.
Lancashire Police Appeal for Witnesses
Lancashire Police have asked anyone with information or dashcam footage to call 101, quoting log number 751 of August 30.
Staying Updated on the Situation
National Highways continues to provide updates on the situation, and the motorway is expected to remain closed for a “considerable amount of time.” The incident is a reminder of the importance of driving safely and being aware of the potential dangers on the road.
