McFly's Danny Jones: From Initial Disdain to Band Name Acceptance
McFly’s Danny Jones recently made a surprising confession: he initially hated the band’s name. This revelation came during his stint on the ITV reality show, I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! where he shared the story with his fellow campmates. The guitarist and vocalist admitted to needing some convincing before embracing the now-iconic moniker.
The Back to the Future Influence
The band name, it turns out, was a brainchild of his bandmates – Tom Fletcher, Harry Judd, and Dougie Poynter. Their inspiration? The classic 1985 film, Back to the Future. As Jones recounted, they had several names in consideration but settled on McFly as a nod to the film’s protagonist, Marty McFly, played by Michael J. Fox.
The Crucial Scene
Jones’ initial reaction wasn't exactly enthusiastic. He remembers, “We were trying to come up with a name. We had a few in the pipeline and McFly was one of them,” he recalled. “I hated it.” To sway his opinion, his bandmates employed a rather unconventional tactic: they forced him to watch Back to the Future! He revealed that he hadn't seen the film before, and his opinion changed when he saw a particular scene involving the character Biff. Jones recounted, “As I’m watching it, Biff crashes into the manure truck and I saw it said on the side: D. Jones Manure Manufacturing… [after that] I was like ‘McFly it is’,”
McFly's Continued Success
This humorous anecdote comes amidst McFly’s 21st-anniversary celebrations. The band has released a new album, Power To Play, which reached number two on the UK album charts. Their celebratory year has included surprise shows at London’s Underworld, a performance at the Royal Variety Performance, and sold-out shows at Alexandra Palace and The O2.
A Collaboration For the Ages
The surprises didn't stop there. During one of their UK shows, Busted stormed the stage, leading to a joint announcement: a combined tour in 2025. The excitement has even led to an extension of the tour dates, with an additional 10 shows confirmed for 2025. Tickets are currently on sale. This collaboration alone is enough to excite fans of both bands. Adding to their eventful year, McFly is set to perform at Download 2025 alongside a stellar lineup of artists including Green Day, Sleep Token, KoRn, and many more.
A Lasting Legacy
From initial rejection to a name synonymous with their musical journey, Danny Jones’ story is a testament to the band’s resilience and their ability to turn an initial dislike into a defining feature of their identity. His unexpected journey from disliking the band’s name to embracing it speaks volumes about their creative process and the unexpected ways success can come about. The anecdote highlights the playful dynamics within the band, making for a more engaging and relatable narrative. McFly’s continued success underscores the power of embracing unexpected opportunities and the strength of a collective vision.
