Olivia Munn and John Mulaney are growing their family! The actress, 44, and her husband John Mulaney, 42, welcomed their second child, a daughter, via gestational surrogate on Sept. 14, the couple announced on Instagram on Sunday, Sept. 22.
"Méi June Mulaney came into the world September 14, 2024, the year of the dragon🐉," Munn captioned an Instagram post featuring a photo of herself sitting on Mulaney's lap as she held their daughter in a hospital room.
"I had so many profound emotions about not being able to carry my daughter. When I first met our gestational surrogate we spoke mother to mother. She showed me so much grace and understanding, I knew I had found a real-life angel," she continued. "Words cannot express my gratitude that she kept our baby safe for 9 months and made our dreams come true."
The couple's journey to parenthood has been a challenging one, marked by Munn's breast cancer diagnosis in 2023 and subsequent treatment, which included a double mastectomy. Despite the hurdles, Munn and Mulaney were determined to expand their family. Munn's experience with breast cancer led to a hysterectomy, which meant that she was unable to carry a child herself. However, they turned to surrogacy, a decision that Munn has spoken openly about, highlighting the importance of having options for both fighting cancer and building a family.
In an interview with Vogue, Munn shared her thoughts on surrogacy: "With a surrogate, you have to try to go find a version of yourself somewhere out in the world. Somebody that you trust as much as yourself to live their life as a pregnant woman the same way that you would. But a surrogate isn’t a scary prospect to me anymore because there’s nothing I can do," she said. "I don’t have the ability to carry a baby anymore, so if we want to build our family, this is our option."
Despite the challenges, Munn has remained optimistic and grateful for the support of her husband and the surrogate who helped them bring their daughter into the world. In her Instagram post, she expressed her gratitude for the surrogate, calling her a "real-life angel." The couple's story is a testament to their resilience and their unwavering love for their family. They are a shining example of how love and determination can overcome even the most difficult obstacles.
The couple's new addition joins their son Malcolm Hiệp Mulaney, 2, who they welcomed on Nov. 24, 2021, while their announcement comes just months after they tied the knot in July in an intimate ceremony at a friend's home in New York state.
Mulaney shared a post on his Instagram, as well. The new dad of two wrote, "Méi June Mulaney came into the world September 14, 2024, the year of the dragon🐉. We stole so much stuff from the hospital," he joked, adding, "I love my little girl so much."
The comedian also noted the correct pronunciation and meaning of his daughter's name, complete with a purple heart, just like in Munn's post. "Méi (pronounced may) means plum in Chinese 梅💜."
A New Chapter for a Growing Family
The arrival of their second child marks a new chapter for Munn and Mulaney. It is a testament to their commitment to family and their unwavering love for each other. It is also a celebration of life and the resilience of the human spirit, a reminder that even in the face of adversity, hope and joy can prevail.
While Munn's journey has been marked by difficult challenges, it has also been a source of strength and inspiration for many others who have faced similar struggles. Her openness and honesty about her experiences have helped to break down stigma and provide support for those who are battling cancer or facing infertility.
