Olivia Munn and John Mulaney are expanding their family! The actress, 44, and her husband John Mulaney, 42, welcomed their second child, a daughter, via gestational surrogate on Sept. 14, the couple announced on Instagram on Sunday, Sept. 22.

"Méi June Mulaney came into the world September 14, 2024, the year of the dragon🐉," Munn captioned an Instagram post featuring a photo of herself sitting on Mulaney's lap as she held their daughter in a hospital room.

"I had so many profound emotions about not being able to carry my daughter. When I first met our gestational surrogate we spoke mother to mother. She showed me so much grace and understanding, I knew I had found a real-life angel," she continued. "Words cannot express my gratitude that she kept our baby safe for 9 months and made our dreams come true."

The couple's new addition joins their son Malcolm Hiệp Mulaney, 2, who they welcomed on Nov. 24, 2021. The arrival of their second child comes just months after the couple tied the knot in July in an intimate ceremony at a friend's home in New York state.

The couple's announcement comes after Munn's breast cancer diagnosis and treatment in 2023. In an interview with Vogue published in May, Munn shared that she underwent a hysterectomy the month prior, which she said would improve her quality of life but also meant that she’d no longer be able to carry any future children.

The couple's decision to use a surrogate came after Munn had already frozen her eggs several times before the surgery. "When you’re pregnant with your own baby, it’s like teamwork — you and the baby working together to make their little life come true,” Munn told Vogue. "You’re doing all this work to eat well, try to not have anxiety, just do all the right things during the pregnancy. With a surrogate, you have to try to go find a version of yourself somewhere out in the world. Somebody that you trust as much as yourself to live their life as a pregnant woman the same way that you would. But a surrogate isn’t a scary prospect to me anymore because there’s nothing I can do. I don’t have the ability to carry a baby anymore, so if we want to build our family, this is our option. This journey has made me realize how grateful I am to have options for not only fighting cancer, but also having more children if we want, because I know a lot of people don’t have those options."

Surrogacy After Breast Cancer

Munn's openness about her breast cancer diagnosis has inspired many and sparked conversations about the importance of breast cancer screening. She shared on Instagram that a risk assessment score, which she said many women may not know about, helped her doctors identify the disease. Munn later had to undergo four surgeries, including a double mastectomy.

In her post announcing her daughter's arrival, Munn expressed gratitude for the surrogate who carried her daughter. "Words cannot express my gratitude that she kept our baby safe for 9 months and made our dreams come true," she wrote.

Expanding Their Family

The couple's decision to expand their family via surrogacy after Munn's breast cancer diagnosis and treatment highlights the importance of options for families who face challenges in building their families. Munn and Mulaney's journey, marked by both joy and adversity, is an inspiring story about resilience, love, and the strength of the human spirit.
