The Carolina Panthers made just one call-up from the practice squad this weekend. As announced on Saturday afternoon, the team has elevated tight end Feleipe Franks ahead of tomorrow’s home opener against the Los Angeles Chargers. This will be the 26-year-old’s second consecutive game in uniform to start the 2024 campaign.

His first, last Sunday’s season-opening loss to the New Orleans Saints, came as a member of the team’s 53-man roster. He recorded four snaps on offense and 17 on special teams, where he recovered a muffed punt towards the end of the 47-10 defeat. Franks would then be waived by the Panthers the very next day. He’d return as a member of the practice squad on Wednesday.

With starter Tommy Tremble listed as questionable with injuries to his hamstring and back, Franks will provide some depth at the tight end position for Carolina. But that depth is likelier to be considered insurance, as head coach Dave Canales told reporters on Friday that he expects Tremble to make his season debut.

Why The Move?

Franks' elevation to the active roster suggests that the Panthers are still uncertain about Tremble's health, even after he was listed as questionable for Week 2. The team is taking no chances on the tight end position, and they believe Franks can provide a reliable backup if Tremble is unable to play. Franks' experience in the special teams unit is also valuable, adding another layer of utility to his presence on the field.

Franks' Impact In Week 1

While Franks' role in the Panthers' offensive game plan was limited in Week 1, his impact extended beyond the typical tight end responsibilities. Franks played a vital role in the special teams unit, showcasing his ability to make contributions in different facets of the game. His recovery of a muffed punt was a crucial play, demonstrating his awareness and athleticism.

Franks' Journey to Carolina

Franks initially joined the Panthers this past July, transitioning from his quarterback days at the University of Florida to a tight end role. He spent time on the Panthers' practice squad before being elevated to the active roster for the Week 1 matchup against the Saints. Following the game, Franks was waived but quickly re-signed to the practice squad, showcasing the team's faith in his potential.

The Tight End Situation in Carolina

The Panthers are currently dealing with injury concerns at the tight end position, which has fueled the call-up of Franks. With Tremble's status for the Week 2 game uncertain, the team has a need for depth at the position. Ian Thomas, another veteran tight end on the Panthers roster, also missed Week 1 due to a calf injury. The team will be looking for a reliable pass-catching threat at the position to provide a spark to the offense.

Looking Ahead: Carolina's Tight End Puzzle

The Panthers face a challenging task of navigating the tight end position in the coming weeks. With injuries to key players, the team has called on Franks to step up and provide depth. Franks' ability to contribute in both offensive and special teams roles makes him a valuable asset for the Panthers. The team's decision to elevate Franks to the active roster for Week 2 showcases the importance of depth and the unpredictability of injuries in a competitive league like the NFL.

Franks' Second Chance: An Opportunity for Growth

Franks' journey to Carolina highlights the dynamic nature of professional football. The transition from quarterback to tight end is a challenging one, and Franks' dedication to mastering his new position is commendable. His elevation to the active roster for Week 2 represents a second chance for him to showcase his abilities on the field. With increased playing time, Franks has a chance to establish himself as a vital part of the Panthers' offense and demonstrate his potential for growth at the tight end position.
