Perdue Chicken Nuggets and Tenders Recalled Due to Metal Contamination
Perdue Foods LLC has issued a recall for more than 165,000 pounds of frozen chicken nuggets and chicken tenders due to concerns that the products may be contaminated with metal wire. The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced the recall on Friday, August 16, 2024, urging consumers to discard the affected products.
What Products Are Recalled?
The recall affects the following products:
- Perdue Simply Smart Organics Breaded Chicken Breast Nuggets: 22-ounce packages with a “Best If Used By” date of March 25, 2025.
- Perdue Chicken Breast Tenders: 29-ounce packages with a “Best If Used By” date of March 25, 2025.
- BUTCHERBOX Organic Chicken Breast Nuggets: 22-ounce packages with a “Best If Used By” date of March 25, 2025.
All of the recalled products were produced on March 23, 2024, and bear establishment number ‘P-33944’ on the back of the package. The products were sold at retail locations nationwide and online, but the specific retailers have not been identified.
Why Was the Recall Issued?
The FSIS announced the recall after receiving consumer complaints regarding the presence of metal wire in the chicken products. The metal wire was inadvertently introduced into the manufacturing process, according to Perdue. The company stated that no injuries or illnesses have been reported in connection with the contaminated products, but the recall was issued out of an abundance of caution.
What Should Consumers Do?
Consumers who have purchased the recalled products are urged not to consume them. The FSIS recommends that consumers discard the products or return them to the place of purchase. Consumers with questions about the recall can contact Perdue Consumer Care at 1-866-866-3703.
A Recent Trend in Food Recalls
This recall is the latest in a series of food recalls related to metal contamination. In November 2023, Tyson Foods recalled around 30,000 pounds of dinosaur-shaped frozen chicken nuggets after consumers reported finding metal pieces in the product. These incidents highlight the importance of food safety and the need for vigilance in monitoring food production processes.
A Growing Concern: Food Safety in the Spotlight
The Perdue recall adds to a growing list of food safety concerns that have plagued consumers in recent years. From listeria contamination to undeclared allergens, food safety issues have become increasingly common. In addition to the Perdue recall, a number of other food products have been recalled this month, including cinnamon, a chocolate bar, and guacamole products. These recalls underscore the need for heightened awareness and vigilance regarding food safety practices.
Guacamole Recall: Listeria Fears
On August 2, 2024, Metro Produce Distributors Inc. announced a recall of Lunds & Byerlys fresh guacamole products due to potential listeria contamination. Listeria monocytogenes is a serious foodborne pathogen that can cause severe illness in vulnerable individuals. Potential symptoms of listeria infection include headaches, stiffness, and nausea. The FDA warns that listeria can cause fatal infections in young children and pregnant women, as well as stillbirths. The guacamole products were distributed in Minnesota, specifically the Twin Cities area and St. Cloud, and were sold in clear plastic containers. While no illnesses were reported at the time of the recall, the FDA's warning serves as a reminder of the potential dangers of foodborne pathogens and the importance of food safety protocols.
Consumers and the Food Safety Equation: A Collaborative Approach
The Perdue chicken recall and the recent guacamole recall highlight the critical need for a collaborative approach to food safety. Consumers play a vital role in ensuring the safety of the food they consume. By being aware of food recalls, carefully examining product labels, and following proper food handling guidelines, consumers can contribute to a safer food environment. The FSIS, FDA, and other regulatory agencies are also committed to protecting consumers from foodborne illnesses through rigorous inspection and oversight of the food industry. By working together, consumers and regulatory agencies can help to create a safer and more secure food supply chain.
Beyond the Recall: Lessons Learned
The recent food recalls underscore the importance of consumer awareness and proactive measures. Consumers should make it a habit to check for recall notices, examine product labels carefully, and practice safe food handling methods. Food manufacturers also have a responsibility to implement rigorous quality control measures and transparently communicate with consumers about potential safety issues. Collaboration between consumers, manufacturers, and regulatory agencies is essential to ensure a safe and trustworthy food supply chain.
