A light plane with two people on board has crash-landed in a park near a primary school shortly before students headed home for the day. The Piper PA-28 took off from Bankstown Airport, in Sydney's southwest, about 2.20pm on Thursday before crashing into trees next to sporting fields at nearby Bossley Park about five minutes later. A 37-year-old man and a 34-year-old woman were onboard but sustained only minor injuries.

The pilot, who was on a training flight, made a mayday call after the engine failed. He was able to safely land the plane in a park near Mary Immaculate Catholic Primary School. The plane appears to have used the trees in the park to soften its landing. The pilot and passenger refused treatment from paramedics.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) is investigating the incident. The ATSB spokesman said that the organization has been notified of the accident and is gathering further information to inform an investigation decision. The ATSB investigates all transport accidents in Australia, including aviation, marine and rail accidents.

The Aftermath of the Crash

The crash has caused concern among parents and students at the school. The principal, Beverly Coffey, said that parents coming to pick up their children informed staff of the crash. "We thought they might have had too many drinks in the afternoon, (then) we looked out and we could see it," she said.

Teachers and administrative staff donned high-visibility clothing to handle "some pretty upset kids", but the crash did not otherwise impact the end of the school day, Ms Coffey said.

The crash has also raised concerns about the safety of light aircraft in urban areas. The plane was believed to be carrying up to 340 liters of fuel and a 100m fire protection zone was set up to monitor for leaks.

A Close Call

One parent told Seven News the pilot had protected people on the ground by crashing into the trees. "I honestly think that the pilot saved a bigger accident than what's actually happened," she said.

The pilot's quick thinking and skill in landing the plane safely prevented a major tragedy. The pilot's actions have been praised by authorities and the public. The crash serves as a reminder of the dangers of flying, even in small aircraft. It also highlights the importance of pilot training and safety procedures.

The Importance of Safety

This incident highlights the importance of safety in aviation. The ATSB's investigation will likely focus on the cause of the engine failure. The investigation will also examine the pilot's actions and the plane's maintenance records.

The investigation will help to ensure the safety of aviation in Australia. This incident is a reminder that flying is always inherently risky. Pilots must be properly trained and aircraft must be properly maintained to ensure the safety of passengers and the public.

The crash also raises concerns about the proximity of airports to populated areas. This is a delicate balancing act that requires careful consideration of safety, environmental, and economic factors. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of aviation accidents in populated areas.
