A Hilliard beer garden recently got into the Oktoberfest spirit in one of the best ways we can think of: “Sausage Swinging.”
HillGarten–which sells beer, wine and German-small plates in a communal outdoor setting–recently held its Oktoberfest 2024 celebration, which featured a new Sausage Swinging challenge. The contest was a resounding success, drawing crowds of curious onlookers and eager participants.
How It Works
And it’s exactly what it sounds like. Each participant affixed a sausage to their body by tying a piece of string around their waist, and attaching the other end to a sausage. They would then swing their hips to generate momentum for the sausage, and attempt to catch it with in their mouths. The first person to catch the sausage in their mouth was deemed the winner.
“Just Swinging the Weiner Into Your Mouth”
Here’s how HilGarten described it:
“Just swinging the wiener into your mouth and catch it without using your hands.”
The challenge quickly captured the attention of social media, with videos of the Sausage Swinging contest circulating online. Participants, adorned with their sausage appendages, could be seen contorting their bodies, using their hips to generate momentum. The sausage swung in a frenzy, as they attempted to catch it with their mouths. It was a spectacle of chaotic joy and hilarious attempts to conquer the unconventional challenge.
A New Oktoberfest Tradition?
A HilGarten representative told 614Now that two groups of six completed the challenge, and that they plan to offer the contest again in 2025. We’ll keep our fingers, and our sausages crossed. This unusual competition highlights the unique and entertaining spirit of Oktoberfest celebrations, pushing the boundaries of tradition and creating unforgettable moments.
A Sausage Swinging Legacy
The Sausage Swinging challenge at HillGarten is not just a humorous spectacle, it's a testament to the power of community and creative entertainment. The event has already become a talking point for those in Columbus, with many eagerly awaiting the return of the challenge next year. The success of the Sausage Swinging contest has established a new, bizarre, and potentially enduring Oktoberfest tradition, leaving participants and spectators with a unique and memorable experience.
