Severe Weather Forces Postponement of Festive Events Across Wales
Preparations were underway for the arrival of Storm Darragh, bringing strong winds and heavy rain from Friday evening through Sunday. The Met Office issued severe weather warnings, prompting the cancellation and postponement of several Christmas events across Wales, leaving many disappointed but prioritizing safety.
Impact on Festive Celebrations
Organisers of Monmouth’s popular Christmas Lantern Parade made the difficult decision to postpone Friday night’s event due to the severe weather warnings. The parade, scheduled to start from the Monnow Bridge at 6.30 pm, was postponed to ensure the safety of participants and attendees. Joanne Stephens, an organiser, expressed their regret but emphasized the importance of prioritizing safety in such adverse weather conditions. They assured the public that they were exploring alternative dates and would provide updates.
The Banbury Lantern Parade, planned for Saturday afternoon, also fell victim to the storm's wrath. Banbury BID prioritized the safety of children and other attendees, postponing the event for a week.
In Banbury, the usual Saturday market and the weekly Parkrun in Spiceball Park were also cancelled. Organisers considered the state of the course and the predicted impact of Storm Darragh, making the decision to cancel for safety reasons. A Craft Fayre and Santa’s Grotto at the RAFA Club on Broad Street were also postponed until the following Saturday.
The Cardigan Giant Lantern Parade, a highlight of the festive season, faced a similar fate. Organised by Small World Theatre, the event, scheduled for 7:00 pm on Friday, December 6th, had to be postponed due to the Met Office warnings of heavy rain and wind gusts exceeding 50mph in Cardigan. Organizers regretfully announced the postponement, promising to reschedule the event as soon as possible and make it an unforgettable Christmas event.
Cardigan's Festival of Light
This year's Lantern Parade was part of Cardigan's expanded Festival of Light (Gŵyl y Golau), running from November 30th to December 20th. This festival features a light trail, Christmas displays, and other festive events supported by Cardigan Town Council and funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. Despite the postponement of the parade, the festival continues, offering several other light-themed attractions.
Beyond the Parades: Other Storm Impacts
The impact of Storm Darragh extended beyond the festive events. In Milford Haven, the planned visit by Father Christmas was cancelled due to the amber weather warning. In Pembrokeshire, the Willhome Farm Barn attraction is facing a “last chance saloon” to justify staying open, with a site visit scheduled to address outstanding planning issues.
Additionally, a proposal is before the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park to surrender the lease of the Newport Parrog car park to the local town council, potentially enabling them to introduce parking charges to fund the maintenance of the closure-threatened public toilet. This illustrates the ripple effect of severe weather on various aspects of community life.
A Look Ahead
While Storm Darragh brought disruptions and cancellations, the spirit of the festive season remains strong. Organizers of the postponed events are working to reschedule, promising even more spectacular celebrations when the weather permits. The resilience and adaptability demonstrated by communities in the face of adversity underscore the true meaning of the season: togetherness, perseverance, and unwavering hope for the future. This spirit and community support is what matters most. We eagerly anticipate the rescheduled events, illuminating the towns and cities with festive cheer once the storm has passed.
A Magical Christmas Still Awaits
Despite the weather-related setbacks, the Christmas spirit continues to shine brightly across Wales. Communities affected are demonstrating incredible resilience, adapting to the situation and supporting each other. The postponed parades and events will return with renewed festive cheer, creating lasting memories and enhancing the community spirit.
