From Estate Agent to Mountain Climber: One Woman's Journey to Finding Adventure and Making a Living From It

Grace Kelly, a 33-year-old woman from Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, has traded her desk job as an estate agent for a life of adventure. Her journey began with a simple sense of accomplishment after summiting Mount Snowdon in 2018, but it quickly escalated into a passion that has taken her all over the world, from the mountains of Canada to the glaciers of Iceland. In 2020 alone, Kelly conquered an impressive 23 mountains, fueled by a desire to escape the routine and find solace in the great outdoors.

Overcoming Loneliness and Finding Community Through Hiking

Kelly's decision to pursue hiking was also influenced by a sense of loneliness. As her friends settled down and started families, she felt a growing disconnect from the social circles she was accustomed to. “All my friends had settled down and none of my friends were wanting to get into hiking or anything,” she explained to PA Real Life, adding that four of her closest friends had become pregnant in the same year. Finding solace in the mountains, Kelly embarked on a journey of self-discovery and connected with like-minded individuals who shared her passion for adventure.

Building a Following and Turning Passion into a Business

As Kelly's travels became more frequent and daring, she began sharing her experiences on social media, documenting her adventures on Instagram and TikTok. Her authentic storytelling and stunning visuals resonated with a growing audience, and she quickly amassed a loyal following of over 113,000 on Instagram and 36,000 on TikTok.

Capitalizing on her online presence, Kelly transitioned from a full-time estate agent to a full-time adventurer, turning her passion into a lucrative business. She secured brand partnerships and began hosting small-group trips, offering immersive experiences that combined breathtaking landscapes with a sense of camaraderie.

Hosting Trips and Embracing Inclusivity

Kelly's trips are designed for individuals who are seeking adventure and connection. She carefully curates each itinerary, ensuring that participants have access to comfortable accommodation, delicious food, and safe transportation. The cost of these trips ranges from £1,600 to £1,900, a price that reflects the value of the experience and the dedication Kelly pours into creating memorable journeys.

One of her most memorable projects involved collaborating with a man who had converted a yellow American school bus into a mobile hostel, complete with three sets of bunk beds. Kelly hosted two back-to-back road trips in Scotland on this unique vehicle, providing her guests with an unconventional and unforgettable experience.

Kelly's commitment to inclusivity extends beyond her choice of destinations and activities. She actively welcomes both men and women on her trips, believing that everyone deserves the opportunity to step out of their comfort zones and connect with others who share their passion for adventure. She explained, “I know that there’s so many guys out there as well that want to meet new people and make friends and step out of their comfort zone. We’ve had some great laughs and some great experiences and great bonding moments and stuff with people on the trips and I just feel like it adds to the experience, having it open to everybody.”

Confronting Fear and Embracing Vulnerability

As a solo female traveler, Kelly has encountered skepticism and concerns about the safety of her adventures. She acknowledges the inherent vulnerability that comes with traveling alone as a woman, but she refuses to let fear dictate her choices.

Instead, Kelly has adopted a proactive approach to safety, incorporating a range of practical tips and tricks into her routine. She always makes sure to have her keys with her when she's sleeping, ensures her vehicle is reversed into parking spots, and refrains from mentioning that she's traveling alone when engaging with strangers. She recounts an experience at a hostel where the receptionist loudly announced her room number, revealing that she was traveling solo, prompting her to request a different room for her own safety.

Navigating Social Media and Balancing Privacy

Kelly is also mindful of her online presence, balancing her desire to share her experiences with the need to protect her privacy. She avoids sharing her location until she's already departed and refrains from broadcasting her solo status on social media, acknowledging the potential dangers associated with oversharing. However, she remains committed to using social media as a platform to inspire others, encouraging them to embrace adventure and overcome their fears. She believes that fear is a natural emotion but should not be allowed to hold people back from pursuing their passions.

From Passion to Profession: Finding Fulfillment in Adventure

Kelly's journey highlights the power of following your passions and the rewards that come from embracing the unknown. She has transformed her love for adventure into a successful business, demonstrating that pursuing your dreams is possible, even if it means stepping outside of your comfort zone. Her story serves as an inspiration to anyone who feels stuck in a rut, encouraging them to find their own path to fulfillment, whether it's through mountain climbing, solo travel, or any other pursuit that ignites their passion.

While she acknowledges the potential risks involved, Kelly's unwavering determination and her commitment to safety have allowed her to experience the world in a way that many only dream of. Her story is a testament to the power of human resilience, the importance of community, and the transformative potential of embracing adventure.

A Final Word: Adventures Await, But Be Prepared

Kelly's story reminds us that the world is full of incredible experiences waiting to be discovered. But as with any journey, it's essential to be prepared, both physically and mentally. Take the time to research your destination, pack appropriately, and prioritize safety. And most importantly, embrace the unknown with an open mind and a sense of adventure. The journey may be challenging at times, but the rewards are immeasurable.
