One Strictly Come Dancing star has been given a major boost as they emerged as a 'new favourite' ahead of the first elimination of the series. There's not long to go until all 15 couples perform once again in this year's run of the BBC One dance contest.
Last Saturday night (September 21), the new pairings made their ballroom debuts with JLS star JB Gill and his dance partner Amy Dowden hitting the top spot as they were awarded 31 points from the judges for their waltz to When I Need You by singer Leo Sayer.
Meanwhile, Tasha Ghouri and Aljaz Skorjanec and Sarah Hadland and Vito Coppola closely followed the week one leaders in joint-second place with a total of 30 points out of a possible 40 each.

Strictly’s first-ever blind contestant, Chris McCausland, was told he was “fabulous” after his performance with professional dancer Dianne Buswell. The pair performed a cha cha to Beatles hit Twist And Shout which was awarded 23 points from the judges.
And they weren't the only ones sitting with 23 points as Jamie Borthwick and Michelle Tsiakkas, Tom Dean and Nadiya Bychkova and Sam Quek and Nikita Kuzmin all found themselves sitting in the middle of the leaderboard.
But just a couple of says before Strictly's second live show of the series, with odds of 3/1, Chris has emerged as the new favourite to win this year’s series, overtaking former frontrunner Tasha, who had a brief stint at the top after last weekend's live show. This shift comes as betting habits have changed, with bets on Chris to win increasing by over 120% this week alone.
Analysing the latest odds, Betfred’s Kayley Cornelius said: “Chris McCausland stole the nation's hearts last weekend when he and pro partner Dianne Buswell wowed everyone with a stunning cha-cha to The Beatles' “Twist and Shout.” Even though it was just week one of the competition, fans were blown away by Chris's skills and talent.
“Heading into week two, he's now the favourite at 3/1 to win, and those odds could get even shorter by Sunday night if he can top last week's performance.”
She continued: “Since last weekend, bets on Chris to win have surged by an incredible 120%, with punters backing the comedian to go all the way. Meanwhile, bets on former frontrunner Tasha Ghouri, who led the market after Saturday, have come to a halt.
“This could be partly due to the criticism and backlash Tasha's faced over her past dance experience, making her less appealing to punters worried she might not have the public support they originally thought. Still, even with her odds slipping, Tasha remains a strong contender at 7/2 to win.”
BBC's Strictly Come Dancing has a surprising new favourite to win after the couple’s first dance. Bookmakers reckon Scouse comedian Chris McCausland could be crowned this year's winner and take home the Glitterball trophy following his cha cha cha performance.
The 47-year-old teamed up with Dianne Buswell to deliver the dance to The Beatles’ Twist and Shout. It was the first time the panel - made up of Anton Du Beke, Craig Revel Horwood, Shirley, Ballas and Motsi Mabuse - and viewers got to see the celebrities on the dancefloor with their respective partners.
After nearly bringing Shirley to tears, Chris’ performance shook up the betting markets. Before the weekend, Chris, Strictly’s first-ever blind contestant, was only ranked 9th favourite out of the 15 contestants to win the series, with odds of 16 to 1 - which meant he was given just a 6% chance of winning.
He was placed way behind the pre-show favourites JLS singer JB Gill and Love Island star Tasha Ghouri. But his odds have now been drastically cut.

JLS singer JB Gill and his professional partner Amy Dowden justified their pre-show billing by topping the judges’ leaderboard on Saturday night with 31 points as Amy returned to the dancefloor after completing treatment for cancer.
There were also impressive performances from Love Island star Tasha Ghouri and her partner Aljaž Škorjanec, who scored 30 points and were joint second on the opening night leaderboard.
But they may have been upstaged by Chris who caused a frenzy with fans and had Shirley Ballas emotional. She said: “When I saw the street lights at the beginning, I really didn’t know what to expect. You had lifts – just to take her between your legs, you have to time that, it’s hard enough as it is! You had great skills when it came to listening to your partner.”
Chris was given a score of 23 by the judges. There was no audience vote this weekend with the first elimination taking place next Sunday. The show will span 14 weeks, with one celebrity being shown the door each week, leading up to a live final on December 14.
