Therapy dog Boris will be the star attraction at a care home as staff and residents celebrate International Dog Day today, Monday, August 26. HC-One’s Dove Court Care Home, in Burnley, will pay thanks to canine companionship by honouring the joy created by their frequent visitor. Boris has brought many smiles to the residents of Dove Court, a care home which provides residential, nursing and dementia care. Regular weekly visits from Boris have become a highlight for many.
Steven Molloy, a blind resident, said: “I just love him; he is such a good boy!” Mr Molloy always looks forward to his weekly visits from Boris, as they brighten up his day. Rita Summerscales, another resident of Dove Court, enjoys walking Boris. For her, Boris’ visits bring back fond memories of her own dog named Sophie, a Lhasa Apso.
Susan Gulaiczuk and Gordon Cligram, also residents at Dove Court, share their delight in Boris’ visits. Ms Gulaiczuk loves seeing animals and always appreciates a cuddle from Boris. Mr Cligram, on the other hand, likes to give Boris a treat during his weekly sessions.
International Dog Day, observed every year on August 26, was established by pet lifestyle expert and author Colleen Paige in 2004. The day aims to raise awareness about animal welfare and promote adoption. It also highlights the importance for people to take better care of their pets and make responsible choices in pet ownership.
Wellbeing co-ordinator at Dove Court Care Home, Nicola Martin, who helps arrange Boris’ visits, said: “Our residents look forward to their weekly visits from our therapy dog Boris and can’t wait to give him extra cuddles and stroke him.” Stephanie Tillotson, another wellbeing co-ordinator at Dove Court, added: “It’s lovely to see the residents faces light up when they see Boris, he is such a friendly lovable dog who loves to come in and see our residents.”
Benefits of Therapy Dogs in Care Homes
Therapy dogs can have a profound impact on the lives of care home residents, offering a range of benefits that extend beyond companionship. These furry friends can provide emotional support, reduce stress, and promote social interaction.
Emotional Support and Stress Reduction
Studies have shown that interaction with animals, particularly dogs, can lower blood pressure, heart rate, and cortisol levels, all of which are associated with stress. The gentle touch of a dog, the sound of their soft breathing, and their playful demeanor can create a sense of calm and well-being.
For residents who may be experiencing loneliness, isolation, or anxiety, therapy dogs can offer a sense of purpose and connection. A simple act of petting a dog can release endorphins, which have mood-boosting effects, and create a feeling of happiness.
Social Interaction and Stimulation
Therapy dogs can act as catalysts for social interaction, bringing residents together and fostering a sense of community. Residents often share stories about their own pets, engage in conversations about dog breeds, and participate in activities involving the therapy dog.
These interactions can help reduce feelings of isolation and provide opportunities for cognitive stimulation. The presence of a therapy dog can encourage residents to engage in physical activity, such as taking a walk or playing fetch, which can improve their overall health and well-being.
Dove Court Care Home Celebrates Boris’s Impact
At Dove Court, the residents have formed a strong bond with Boris, who brings them joy and comfort with each visit. His presence has become a highlight of their week, providing a much-needed dose of love and affection.
The staff at Dove Court recognize the positive impact that Boris has had on the residents, highlighting how his visits have brightened their days and provided them with a sense of purpose and connection.
A Tail of Hope and Happiness
The story of Boris at Dove Court Care Home is a testament to the power of canine companionship. In a world where loneliness and isolation can be prevalent, particularly in care homes, therapy dogs like Boris offer a beacon of hope and happiness.
Their gentle nature and unconditional love can have a transformative impact on residents' lives, reminding them of the simple pleasures of human-animal interaction. As International Dog Day is celebrated, it is important to recognize the invaluable contributions of therapy dogs in enriching the lives of care home residents.
