A man accused of setting a house alight in Tocumwal will remain behind bars for at least another week. Murray James Clarke declined to make an application for bail when his matter went before Albury Local Court on Thursday, August 22. Clarke stands accused of causing fire to engulf a house in Finley Street in the early hours of Wednesday morning, causing extensive damage.

Emergency services were called to the unoccupied home about 5am, taking about an hour to extinguish the flames. He did not enter a plea to a single charge of damage property by fire or explosion to a value greater than $15,000.

Ms McLaughlin formally refused bail for Clarke to appear again before the same court for a mention on Wednesday, August 28. He will be required to again appear via a video link to custody.

Murray River Police District officers attended the scene on Wednesday and immediately established a crime scene in order to begin an investigation into the fire. Police said Clarke was arrested at his home in Murray Street, Tocumwal, on Wednesday about 2pm in the wake of inquiries conducted by detectives from Deniliquin. He was charged at Finley police station.
