A young adult drowned at Sauble Beach in South Bruce Peninsula. Emergency services responded to a report of two people in distress while swimming in the water near the beach around 3:45 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.

The OPP say one person was brought safely to shore. A second individual was also brought in from the water and police say lifesaving measures were performed, but they weren’t successful.

“As a result, a 22-year-old from Mississauga was pronounced deceased,” Grey Bruce OPP say in a statement.

The identity of the victim will not be released due to privacy for the family. The Grey Bruce OPP wants to thank all bystanders for their assistance with the rescue.

The OPP encourages all Ontarians to take personal responsibility for ensuring water safety for themselves and their children. It is important for everyone to be aware of proper boating and swimming practices.

Water Safety Awareness

Drowning is a serious and often preventable tragedy. According to the Canadian Red Cross, drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury-related death for children under 14 in Canada.

Here are some tips to help stay safe in and around water:

  • Always swim with a buddy.
  • Never swim alone.
  • Don't swim in areas with strong currents or rough waves.
  • Wear a life jacket when boating or participating in water sports.
  • Supervise children closely when they are in or around water.
  • Learn how to swim and how to perform CPR.

Recent Water-Related Incidents

The tragic incident at Sauble Beach is unfortunately not an isolated event. There have been a number of other water-related incidents in Ontario in recent weeks.

On August 22, a 21-year-old from Owen Sound was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries after a motorcycle crash on Bruce Road 8 in South Bruce Peninsula.

These incidents highlight the importance of water safety and the need to take precautions to prevent tragedies.

Water Safety: A Shared Responsibility

Water safety is a shared responsibility. It is important for individuals, families, communities, and government agencies to work together to prevent drowning and other water-related incidents. By following safety guidelines, being aware of the risks, and taking appropriate precautions, we can help to keep everyone safe in and around water.
