The Troon RNLI lifeboat crew was called into action on Friday evening to rescue a stricken vessel carrying nine people. The Belfast Coastguard alerted the RNLI after receiving a report that a 42ft motor vessel was aground outside the entrance to Troon Harbour. The RNLI Trent class all-weather lifeboat, RNLB Jim Moffat, and D Class inshore lifeboat Sheena, swiftly responded to the call. The Ardrossan Coastguard Rescue Team also joined the operation to provide assistance from the shore.

The RNLI crew expertly assisted in anchoring the stricken vessel before safely transferring the six adults and three children on board to the lifeboat. The casualty vessel remained on the rocks until arrangements for recovery could be made by its owners.

Following the successful rescue, Troon RNLI Lifeboat coxswain Dale Caddis emphasized the importance of safety precautions on the water. “We would like to take this opportunity to remind people to check weather and tide times before venturing out on the water, and the importance of checking local signage and navigation charts for dangers and hazards,” he said.

He further emphasized the importance of seeking immediate assistance in case of emergency: “If you get into difficulty at sea or along the coast, or spot someone else in trouble, always dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”

Rescue Operation on Cumbrae

Another rescue operation involving the RNLI took place on Sunday, September 1, when a yacht ran aground on Cumbrae. The Belfast Coastguard received a call for help at around 1am. The location of the casualty vessel prompted the request for additional assistance from both Troon and Arran RNLI lifeboats.

A Collaborative Effort

Troon lifeboat escorted the vessel to Largs while the Arran lifeboat returned to its station. The Largs Coastguard Rescue Team also joined the effort, providing support to secure the vessel alongside at Largs Yacht Haven. A spokesperson from RNLI Troon Lifeboat detailed the operation: “Troon RNLI D class inshore lifeboat ‘Sheena’ was requested to launch with Arran RNLI Lifeboat, Atlantic 85 ‘Rachel Hedderwick’ launched to provide additional assistance.”

A Successful Rescue

The spokesperson continued: “With the crew assembling, the D class inshore lifeboat was prepared for the launch and transported by road to a suitable launch site. After launching, with the assistance of Cumbrae Coastguard Rescue Team, the casualty vessel was located by Troon and Arran lifeboats and was now afloat.”

The spokesperson concluded by highlighting the successful outcome of the operation: “After liaising with those onboard, it was decided that the best course of action was to escort the vessel to Largs Yacht Haven. Troon inshore lifeboat assisted with escorting the casualty vessel and this allowed Arran lifeboat to return to station. With a crew member on board to provide some additional assistance, the casualty vessel was successfully escorted to Largs Yacht Haven and secured alongside with the assistance of the Largs Coastguard Rescue Team. The inshore lifeboat was recovered and returned to Troon where it was made ‘ready for service’ with the assistance of the shore crew.”

A Call for Safety on the Water

These incidents underscore the crucial role played by the RNLI and Coastguard in ensuring maritime safety. The importance of being prepared and taking necessary precautions cannot be overstated. Checking weather and tide conditions, understanding local hazards, and carrying appropriate safety equipment are essential for a safe and enjoyable boating experience. In case of an emergency, remember to dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard. Their swift response and expertise can make the difference between a safe return to shore and a perilous situation at sea.
