The Trump campaign on Sunday said former President Donald Trump is “safe following gunshots in his vicinity.” A person has been detained in connection with the incident at Trump International Golf Club, according to a law enforcement source. Multiple sources said Secret Service fired at the suspect. Officials believe an armed individual intended to target Trump, according to sources briefed on the matter. A long gun has been recovered, according to the law enforcement source. The former president was playing golf at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach. The course was immediately locked down, according to a source familiar. The Secret Service said on X that it is working with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office to investigate a protective incident involving Trump. The Secret Service said the incident occurred shortly before 2 p.m. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have been briefed on the security incident involving Trump and they are both “relieved to know that he is safe,” according to the White House. “I have been briefed on reports of gunshots fired near former President Trump and his property in Florida, and I am glad he is safe. Violence has no place in America,” Harris wrote on the social media platform X. Biden and Harris, both of whom are in Washington, DC, with no public events Sunday, will be kept updated by their team. The incident comes roughly two months after Trump was shot during an assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania, and a bullet grazed his ear. The Secret Service, in conjunction with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, is investigating a protective incident involving former President Donald Trump that occurred shortly before 2 p.m. The former president is safe,” the Secret Service said in a statement. A senior law enforcement official briefed on the incident told NBC News that Trump was on the golf course when what sounded like gunfire was heard in the near distance. He was between the fifth and sixth hole on the golf course when the incident occurred, a source familiar said. As a precaution, the Secret Service moved him to safety, but there was no evidence that Trump was targeted. Local police are looking into the cause of the sound of what may have been gunfire. In a post on X, Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said he had spoken with Trump following the incident. He did not share any information about Trump’s condition but added, “He is one of the strongest people I’ve ever known. He’s in good spirits and he is more resolved than ever to save our country.” Today’s incident will not affect Trump’s campaign schedule next week, a source familiar told NBC News. The White House said in a statement, “The President and Vice President have been briefed about the security incident at the Trump International Golf Course, where former President Trump was golfing. They are relieved to know that he is safe. They will be kept regularly updated by their team.” In a separate post on X, Vice President Kamala Harris said she had been briefed on the incident and added, “I am glad he is safe. Violence has no place in America.” Fox News Host Sean Hannity confirmed a suspect was arrested and is in police custody. An AK-47 was discovered in the bushes, Hannity said local law enforcement confirmed. Four shots were fired, Hannity also confirmed through local law enforcement. Fox News host Bret Baier also spoke to Trump who praised the Secret Service for acting quickly. Trump told Baier he was playing golf on his course in West Palm Beach on the 5th hole when shots rang out. Trump reaffirmed to Baier that he was fine and there was no evidence any shots were near him or hitting near him. He was then put into a golf cart and quickly driven away from that spot back to the clubhouse. “Tell everybody I am fine and the Secret Service did a great job,” Trump praised. This is a developing story and will be updated. A message sent to campaign officials seeking information on the security status and location of Ohio Sen. JD Vance, Trump’s running mate, was not immediately returned. In a statement, Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung said, “President Trump is safe following gunshots in his vicinity. No further details at this time.” The Martin County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post on Sunday that it has stopped a vehicle on northbound Interstate 95 and taken a suspect into custody who is believed to be connected to the shooting. The sheriff’s office said it made the stop after authorities in neighboring Palm Beach County put out a “be on the lookout” alert. The post by the Martin County Sheriff’s Office indicated the suspect was apprehended near Palm City, Florida, about a 45-mile drive north of Trump’s golf course. Northbound lanes of I-95 were shut down, the sheriff’s office said. The White House acknowledged the incident. “The President and Vice President have been briefed about the security incident at the Trump International Golf Course, where former President Trump was golfing. They are relieved to know that he is safe. They will be kept regularly updated by their team,” the White House said in a statement. Attorney General Merrick Garland has been briefed on the situation and is receiving regular updates about it, a Justice Department spokeswoman said. U.S. Secret Service agents opened fire after seeing a person with a firearm near former President Donald Trump’s golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida, while he was golfing Sunday, according to two law enforcement officials. The Republican presidential candidate is safe. The person fled in an SUV and was later apprehended in a nearby county by local law enforcement, the officials said. The officials were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity about an ongoing investigation. An AK-style firearm was recovered at the scene near Trump’s golf course, one of the officials and a third law enforcement official said. The golf course was partially shut down for Trump as he played, and agents were a few holes ahead of him when they noticed the person with the firearm, the officials said. The person appeared to push the muzzle of the rifle through the fence line and that’s when agents fired, the officials said. Trump’s campaign and the Secret Service said Trump was safe, and the agency said it was investigating the incident that occurred shortly before 2 p.m. No injuries were reported, according to a spokesperson for the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office in Florida. Trump often spends the morning playing golf, before having lunch at the Trump International Golf Club West Palm Beach, one of three he owns in the state. Trump has had a stepped-up security footprint since the assassination attempt in July. When he has been at Trump Tower in New York, a lineup of dump trucks have parked in a wall outside the building. And at outdoor rallies, he now speaks from behind an enclosure of bulletproof glass. Max Egusquiza, of Palm Beach, described the emergency response outside Trump’s West Palm Beach golf course. “From what I saw 5 black unmarked SUVs blocked in a grey Mercedes in front of the golf course. There were about 20 or more cop cars flying from nearby streets,” he said. Harris, in a statement said she was “glad” Trump was safe, adding that “violence has no place in America.” In an X post, Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C, one of Trump’s top congressional allies, said he had spoken with Trump after the incident and that Trump was in “good spirits” and was “one of the strongest people I’ve ever known.
