A local, Black-led nonprofit held its construction kick-off for a new youth creative center in Uptown Charlotte on Thursday. Do Greater Charlotte began construction on Creative Lab Uptown, a center cultivating entrepreneurship, digital creativity — like coding and podcasting — and workforce development. Each of the center’s three floors will be dedicated to a different function of youth and workforce development.
Fostering Entrepreneurship and Innovation
The organization’s founder and CEO, William McNeely previously told QCity Metro the space, located in the former Harvy B. Ganntt office building at 500 N. Tryon Street, will create an “ecosystem of possibility.” The center aims to provide a supportive environment for young people to explore their passions, develop their skills, and launch their entrepreneurial ventures. This focus on entrepreneurship is evident in the center's design, with dedicated spaces for workshops, mentorship, and collaboration.
A Hub for Digital Creativity
Creative Lab Uptown recognizes the growing importance of digital skills in today's economy, with a special focus on coding and podcasting. The center will offer hands-on training and mentorship in these areas, equipping young people with the skills they need to succeed in the digital world. The center's commitment to digital creativity aligns with the broader shift towards a more technology-driven society.
Building a Strong Workforce
Beyond entrepreneurship and digital skills, Creative Lab Uptown also aims to play a role in workforce development. The center will partner with local businesses and organizations to provide job training and career development opportunities for young people. This focus on workforce development addresses the need for skilled talent in the Charlotte area and beyond.
Funding the Dream
Wells Fargo has pledged a significant investment in the center, contributing a $750,000 grant to support its mission. The second floor of the space will be called The Wells Fargo Lab for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, signifying the bank's commitment to fostering innovation and entrepreneurship in the community.
A Vision for the Future
Construction is expected to be finished by the end of 2025’s first quarter, McNeely said. When complete, Creative Lab Uptown promises to be a vital resource for young people in Charlotte, providing them with the tools, support, and opportunities they need to succeed. The center's vision for the future is ambitious, aiming to create a positive impact on the lives of countless young people in the community.
An Ecosystem of Possibility
The center's goal of creating an “ecosystem of possibility” is evident in its multi-faceted approach. By fostering entrepreneurship, digital creativity, and workforce development, Creative Lab Uptown aims to empower young people to reach their full potential and contribute to the growth and prosperity of the Charlotte community.
