Government offices are closed on Labor Day, though most retailers and restaurants remain open. The nation’s largest retailer, Walmart, will be open regular hours – typically 6 a.m.-11 p.m. – on Labor Day. Some services may be on shortened holiday hours so be sure to check ahead.

According to a history of the holiday from the U.S. Department of Labor, the day is rooted in the late 19th century when activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America’s strength, prosperity and wellbeing.

The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, Sept. 5, 1882, in New York City. By 1894, 23 more states had adopted the holiday, and on June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed a law making the first Monday in September of each year a national holiday.

Sure, according to the calendar, there are still a few weeks to go before fall officially arrives, but everyone knows that much like Memorial Day ushers in the season, Labor Day sends it packing.

Whatever plans you've got to celebrate the long weekend, a trip to Walmart might be on the list to pick up buns for your Labor Day picnic, back-to-school essentials or shop all the plentiful holiday sales. If that's the case, you might be wondering if Walmart is open on Labor Day in 2024.

Good question. Given that schools, banks and government offices, like the USPS, are closed in observance of the holiday, it's fair to ask if any retailers will be shuttered on Labor Day.

While most stores and restaurants are open for business as usual, some aren't including Costco, which typically closes on all major holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas.

This year, the holiday falls on Monday, Sept. 2. And, yes indeed, Walmart will be open on Labor Day to welcome shoppers. Better yet, a spokesperson tells TODAY.com that stores will be open during normal business hours.

Typically, Walmart's normal operating hours are from 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. That said, it’s always best to check local store hours before heading out the door, just to be on the safe side.
