The music world is in mourning following the sudden death of former X-Factor star Ben Thapa, aged 42. His devastated bandmates from G4, Jonathan Ansell, Mike Christie and Matt Stiff, who all reached Number One in the UK charts back in 2005 alongside their friend, have expressed their deep sorrow in a heartfelt statement.
The cause of his death remains unclear as tributes continue to flood in for the "great friend and amazing man". Ben, who left G4 in 2018 but continued with his music career, had plans to perform with them again.
"Words cannot express how we all feel right now… We understand that this will be heartbreaking news for so many others too and we send you our love and support as we all remember the amazing man and memories that he has left behind. "Ben has been such a major part of the international singing community and he was a critical part of our journey as a group. Thank you for your love at this difficult time. RIP Ben xxxx."
G4's Rise to Fame on the X Factor and Beyond
G4, renowned for their operatic renditions of pop songs, narrowly missed out on The X Factor crown in 2004. Despite not winning, Jonathan, Matthew, and Ben were offered a record deal by Sony post-show.
The band launched their eponymous debut album in 2005, which soared to the top of the UK charts. Their follow-up album, G4 & Friends, entered the charts at number six. In 2007, following the release of their third album, the group announced on GMTV that they were disbanding.
Reportedly, internal disputes led to the split. However, in 2014, the band made a comeback, albeit without Matthew Nick Ashby stepped in as his replacement.
Since then, the band has remained together, regularly performing gigs and releasing albums.
Ben Thapa's Solo Career and Operatic Legacy
After leaving G4 in 2018, Ben Thapa pursued a successful solo career, making his mark in the world of opera. He performed roles such as Tito in La Clemenza di Tito for Teatru Manoel, The President in Mittwoch aus Licht for the Birmingham Opera, and Siegfried in The Quest For The Ring at the Royal Festival Hall in association with Opera North.
In 2020, Ben made his main stage debut at the English National Opera as part of their Carmen education project. He also created the roles of Dr Anton and Salieri in The Paradis Files for Graeae Theatre Company, which toured the UK in 2022, and performed the role of Conan in the new opera Morrigan, performed at the Cork Opera House.
Remembering a Talented Musician and Friend
Ben Thapa's death is a profound loss for the music industry and for his fans worldwide. He was a talented musician with a captivating voice that touched the hearts of many. His contributions to G4 and his solo career will be remembered and cherished.
Beyond his musical talents, Ben was a beloved friend and colleague, known for his kindness, humor, and generosity. His passing leaves a void in the lives of those who knew and loved him. He will be deeply missed.
