Thousands of runners are set to take part in the Yorkshire Marathon Festival in York this weekend, and the event will bring with it a number of road closures and traffic restrictions. The festival, which is taking place on Sunday, October 20, 2024, includes the Yorkshire Marathon, Yorkshire 10 Mile and Yorkshire Marathon Relay, and will see over 10,000 participants running for hundreds of worthy causes.

The event is organised by Jane Tomlinson’s Run For All charity and has firmly established itself as one of the region’s most anticipated annual sporting events. Participants have been encouraged to fundraise for a charity of choice or one of the event’s partner charities, which include St Leonard’s Hospice, Macmillan Cancer Support, Age UK York, Yorkshire Cancer Research, The Island and the Jane Tomlinson Appeal.

Launched in 2013, the Yorkshire Marathon Festival was born with the aim of giving all abilities the opportunity to achieve something amazing and to facilitate a fundraising vehicle for many local and national charities. Since 2013, over 90,000 participants have taken part in the event and over £7.5 million has been raised for charity.

The event will see thousands of runners and spectators descend on York, and the city council has announced a number of road closures that will be in place for the event.

University of York’s Contribution

The Yorkshire Marathon Festival has grown into a major event on the running calendar, attracting runners from both home and abroad. The University of York plays a central role in the event, hosting the start and finish areas, and providing a vital role in supporting runners and volunteers. The University is also encouraging its students and staff to take part in the event, and a number of people from the University will be running for charity.

Staying Safe

The organisers of the Yorkshire Marathon Festival are working hard to ensure that the event runs smoothly and safely. They have put in place a number of measures to ensure the safety of runners, spectators and volunteers.

To make sure the event is a success, it is important for everyone to follow the instructions of the event stewards and officials. All road closures will be lifted as soon as the safety of runners, spectators and visitors can be assured. If you are planning on attending the Yorkshire Marathon Festival, please make sure you check the event website for the latest information on road closures and traffic restrictions.
