Air fryers have really been having their moment in recent years, and for good reason. The handy countertop gadgets have had many people ditching their ovens, in favour of this new way of cooking.
Since they don't require as much - if any - cooking oil, you can prepare food in a much healthier fashion compared to traditional frying. And they're often quicker at cooking too, which is ideal if you live a busy lifestyle and don't have much time to spend in the kitchen.
However, keeping on top of maintenance is crucial - and Experts have now issued a warning that yours could be harbouring a nasty substance that can have 'serious' health implications.
The Hidden Threat Lurking in Your Air Fryer
Mould: A Silent Danger
Mould can harbour in the interior of your air fryer, especially in the basket, if it's not thoroughly cleaned and dried after each use. The combination of food residue, warmth, and moisture creates an ideal environment for mould to grow.
Over time, the buildup of grease and crumbs can further contribute to this issue, making it crucial to clean the appliance after each use to prevent any mould spores from taking hold.
Louise Allen, co-founder of Fountain Filters, says that mould can have 'serious health implications' that many people tend to overlook. She warned: "Exposure to mould can lead to a range of health issues, from minor allergic reactions like sneezing and skin rashes to more severe respiratory problems, particularly for those with asthma or weakened immune systems. As we prepare for the colder months, when mould tends to thrive in the damp and poorly ventilated areas of our homes, it’s more important than ever to be vigilant."
Keeping Your Air Fryer Clean and Mould-Free
The good news is that it's really simple to keep on top of your air fryer cleaning. All you need to do is unplug your appliance, remove all removable parts, and wash them with hot, soapy water.
Then, wipe down the interior with a cloth dipped in a mixture of lemon juice and water, and make sure each part has been dried thoroughly before putting it back together.
Beyond Air Fryers: Other Kitchen Appliances That Need Regular Cleaning
Similarly, your coffee machine - which many people rely on every day for a much-needed caffeine hit in the morning - could also be harbouring some dangerous mould spores if you don't look after it properly. The constant presence of moisture in the water tank and internal tubes, combined with warmth from the brewing process, makes coffee makers a perfect place for mould to thrive.
But again, there's an easy way to prevent mould here too. Simply run a cycle with a mixture of water and white vinegar through the coffee maker, then run two cycles with just water to rinse. Then, ensure the machine is completely dry before storing it.
The Bottom Line
While air fryers offer a convenient and healthier way to cook, it's crucial to be aware of the potential dangers of mould growth and to adopt regular cleaning practices. By taking these simple precautions, you can ensure that your favourite kitchen gadget remains safe and hygienic for years to come.
