Doom's Henchmen face off against Allies of the Avengers in the new game mode that'll arrive in Fortnite on Sept. 17.
Fortnite is introducing a limited-time game mode called Day of Doom on Tuesday that Epic Games says will pit 32 Marvel characters on two sides of a battle over game artifacts. Doom's Henchmen will fight Allies of the Avengers in the new mode, which is part of Fortnite's Chapter 5 Season 4 Doctor Doom events.
In the new mode, the Avengers team will try to stop Doom's forces from collecting six Arcane Artifacts. The Avengers will try to hold the line against respawning Henchmen until the reinforcements are depleted.
It's likely that characters in the game will have some of their superhero weapons and special skills (Captain America's shield, for instance) to make the gameplay interesting.
Doctor Doom's Reign
The headline new feature is the launch of a new Marvel-themed limited-time game mode featuring Marvel heroes and villains. Fortnite's Day of Doom LTM sees upwards of 32 players duke it out in the ultimate battle between good and evil. Doom’s Henchmen are tasked with collecting six Arcane Artefacts, which will prevent the opposition from respawning. Eliminate the remaining Avengers and the villains will emerge victorious.
The Allies of the Avengers, on the other hand, must eliminate Doom’s forces before they collect the Artefacts. Epic explains more: "Doom’s Henchmen have a large number of respawns altogether — reach victory once you and your fellow Avengers have depleted all their reinforcements."
Iron Man Rises Again
Elswhere, Epic Games has announced plans to release the new MCU Iron Man skin and items. The Iron Man goodies will be available from the item shop on September 17, most likely once the update goes live. The new Iron Man skin in Fortnite has already been revealed on official channels and will be added to the game sooner than you’d expect. Iron Man’s new suit can be obtained from the Fortnite item shop on September 17 for 1,500 V-Bucks. Besides the outfit, players can grab the full bundle for 2,500 V-Bucks. This bundle will include an Energy Collector Back Bling, a Mark-45 Energy Blades Pickaxe, a wrap, and an instrument. All of these items can be purchased individually as well, but for now, all eyes are set on the new Iron Man skin in Fortnite. Epic previously featured an Iron Man outfit in a Chapter 2 battle pass. Thanks to the new Fortnite update, which makes battle pass items accessible to all players after a certain period, the Iron Man skin may become available again. However, players will have to wait at least a year or possibly longer for its return, making the current availability of this skin even more special. Die-hard Iron Man fans will instantly recognize this armor from Age of Ultron—the iconic Mark 45 suit. What sets it apart from the previous battle pass skin is its unique hexagonal outline design on the Chest Repulsor Transmitter, which differs from the last skin’s rounded outline and gold-accented color scheme. Even those who already own the earlier skin may want to add this one to their collection.
Beyond the Battle
The big update is also expected to include a new Iron Man Mark-45 skin and a slew of Lego: Lost Isles themed game modes, skins, environments and even Lego Klombos. LEGO Fortnite will receive The Lost Isles content, which adds new environments, Klombos, weapons, items and lots more. Players' prayers have finally been answered, with Epic Games confirming a highly-requested item will soon make its way into LEGO Fortnite. On the subject of the former, Fortnite has made Doctor Doom the cosmic threat he ought to be. Epic Games' live-service darling isn't known for massively advancing the characters it uses, erring on the side of what's been established without creative liberties. Despite this reputation, Fortnite has gone above and beyond when it comes to empowering Victor Von Doom—from giving him a grisly trophy hoard to having him punch far above his weight on the power scale. Now that the Fantastic Four are finally returning to the pop-culture zeitgeist, any games based on them should take notes from Fortnite.
The Rise of Doctor Doom
If told a couple of years ago, few Marvel fans would believe that Fortnite would create one of the most threatening non-comic interpretations of Doctor Doom. In the present, though, this assertion proves to be correct; Fortnite's interpretation of Victor Von Doom is an unparalleled menace. Doctor Doom is no stranger to video game portrayals, considering his status as one of Marvel's oldest and most beloved antagonists. However, 2024 has really started a gaming renaissance for Marvel's Doctor Doom—coinciding with his role as the MCU's next big threat. Not only is he headlining in Fortnite, enjoying the focus of a massive live-service title, but he'll also be the main villain in Marvel Rivals—the brand's answer to games like Overwatch 2 and Valorant. After years of being upstaged by the likes of Thanos and Green Goblin, Dr. Doom is getting his time in the cross-media limelight. Coinciding with the announcement of Avengers: Doomsday and Robert Downey Jr.'s casting as Doom, Fortnite got the chance to make the villain a main feature of its latest season. This version of Doom proudly displays his kills, a list that probably includes the dead Galactus bobbing in the water. Felling the world-eater Galactus is incredibly impressive, but Doom has more trophies still. Versions of The Silver Surfer, Thanos, Ultron, Magneto, Namor, and Doctor Strange have all been slain by Doom—placing him squarely at the top of the food chain. The Fantastic Four, Doom's nemeses, get it the worst. The Thing has been horribly contorted, his body twisted into Doom's throne. Human Torch's heart has been carved out for use as a fireplace, while Invisible Woman's cell is a glass cage with an empty chair—implying that her corpse is lying there on full display. Mr. Fantastic got a darker fate yet, his still-living body crushed into a twitching ball. Across all of his many interpretations, Fortnite's Doctor Doom is one of the strongest. Despite being one of Marvel's oldest superhero teams, the Fantastic Four have been getting the shaft at every turn—and Doctor Doom has long outpaced them, being used as an antagonist across Marvel's canon. Luckily, with The Fantastic Four: First Steps coming in 2025, the Fantastic Four may get another shot in gaming. Fortnite's Doom is a great case study for such a game, encompassing much of what makes the character great. Firstly, his hatred of the Fantastic Four (and Reed Richards in particular) is well shown by his special treatment of them. His power level is also excellently demonstrated; not every version of Doom should be able to kill Galactus, but his Machiavellian grandeur, world-conquering ego, and terrifying intellect should make him a threat to the world. While there's a lot to say about Doom's more lawful behavior, the nuances that give him gentlemanly characteristics, his wrath shouldn't go understated. The way he turns those he slaughters into grim trophies, especially in the Fantastic Four's case, is a great way to keep him firmly of evil alignment.
