The Fremantle Football Club has confirmed four changes to the playing list following the 2024 season. Matthew Taberner, Ethan Hughes, Sebit Kuek and Conrad Williams have been informed they will not be offered contracts for 2025.
Matthew Taberner and Ethan Hughes: Farewell to Freo Legends
Matthew Taberner, a stalwart of the Fremantle forward line, has departed after a decade with the club. Originally drafted in 2012, Taberner played 125 games for Fremantle, kicking 173 goals. He was a consistent performer and a two-time leading goalkicker for the club. Taberner's impact extended beyond the scoreboard; he was a respected leader, particularly with the club's younger forwards.
Ethan Hughes, a versatile defender and wingman, has also called time on his Fremantle career after a decade of service. Hughes played 107 games for Fremantle after being drafted in 2014. He was a key part of the club's backline and was renowned for his courage and selfless play. He was also a vital part of Peel Thunder's inaugural WAFL premiership in 2016.
Farewell to Kuek and Williams
Sebit Kuek, drafted in the 2022 mid-season draft, was unable to make his AFL debut due to an ACL injury sustained in 2023. Kuek played 23 games for Peel Thunder and kicked 34 goals, demonstrating his potential as a key forward.
Conrad Williams, a graduate of the club's Next Generation Academy, was selected as a Category B rookie in 2022. The speedy forward featured 27 times across Peel Thunder's League and Reserves sides during his time at Fremantle, but ultimately did not make his AFL debut.
Looking Forward
While Fremantle bids farewell to these players, the club looks forward to the future. The club's Executive General Manager of Football, Joe Brierty, expressed gratitude for the contributions of each player. He highlighted their dedication to the club, both on and off the field.
The Fremantle Football Club will provide further list management updates over the coming weeks and during the player movement period.
A Legacy of Freo Pride
Despite the departures, Taberner and Hughes will remain part of Peel's finals campaign, demonstrating their commitment to the club. Their dedication to the club, their courage on the field, and their contributions to the Fremantle community will not be forgotten. The club wishes all four players all the best in their future endeavours.
The Fremantle Football Club has a long history of success, and it is clear that the future is bright. The club is committed to building a strong and competitive team, and it will continue to invest in young talent while also maintaining a core group of experienced players. With a strong foundation in place, the Fremantle Football Club is well-positioned for continued success in the years to come.
