The Carolina Panthers recovered a fumble on the first play of overtime, then kicked a field goal to beat the New York Giants 20-17 Sunday in Munich, Germany.

The Giants and Panthers have both had a similar record so far in the season, currently 2-7 going into Sunday’s game.

The Giants are currently ranked fourth in the NFC East, with the Panthers ranked third in the NFC South.

The Giants have been searching for answers at quarterback and on offense. They will be looking for a spark from their rookies Malik Nabers and Tyrone Tracy Jr.

On the other side of the ball, the Panthers will be looking for a strong performance from Chuba Hubbard and their defense.

The game was a tough watch from the football side — a sluggish matchup between two 2-7 teams who struggled to move the ball downfield.

The Giants finally got a real chance to score, getting into the red zone late in the second half, but Daniel Jones threw a costly pick that bounced off the helmet of linebacker Jadeveon Clowney.

New York came out a bit stronger after halftime, scoring a touchdown on the first play of the second half to cut the deficit down to three. Carolina quickly responded, moving the ball 80 yards down the field for another touchdown.

The Giants opened the final frame with another touchdown, with Jones running 2 yards into the end zone for the score. New York’s good luck continued, recovering a Carolina fumble to get the ball back with eight minutes remaining in the game; however, the hot streak quickly evaporated as Jones threw another interception, picked off by Panthers linebacker Josey Jewell. Despite getting the ball back, Carolina was forced to punt after three ineffective downs.

With 10 seconds left, Gano redeemed himself, making a field goal to tie things up at 17 and send the game to overtime.

Overtime got off to a tough start for New York, with Carolina forcing a fumble and recovering the ball on the Giants' first play of the extra session. All Carolina needed was a field goal, and the Panthers got it, with Eddy Pineiro nailing a 36-yard kick and ending the game. The Panthers won, 20-17 and move to 3-7 on the season.

The Giants were closer to the end zone than they'd been all game when Jadaveon Clowney batted a Daniel Jones pass, which was then caught by a Panthers defender. Red zone turnover.

The Giants lost for the first time overseas, after winning in London three times (2007, 2016, 2022), at Allianz Arena in Munich.

The Giants just can't have good things. Maybe we need to rethink the idea that the Giants' defense is the best unit on the field. Brian Burns sacked Bryce Young two plays into the game, but on the second drive, Young and the Panthers drove down the field with ease. The Panthers cashed in with a Young touchdown pass to rookie tight end Ja'Tavion Sanders and 7-0 lead. Chuba Hubbard sliced through the Giants' defense on the drive, and Big Blue is behind again.

Daniel Jones went 6-of-14 for 54 yards with no touchdowns and one interception in the first half, and the context makes things even worse. Carolina came in with the worst-ranked defense in the NFL. Jones sailed a pass to Malik Nabers on the opening drive, and Nabers was wide open to move the chains on third down.

Jones also missed a possible touchdown on a flea flicker on third-and-1 at midfield, a somewhat cute but aggressive and creative play call by Brian Daboll. Wan'Dale Robinson was WIDE open with plenty of room to run — and Nabers was open as well — but Jones did not throw the ball, instead taking a sack and forcing the Giants to punt.

Had Jones just thrown the ball away, the Giants would have gone for it on fourth-and-1.

Then, late in the first half, with the Giants driving, Theo Johnson released Jadeveon Clowney, who came on a rush. Jones threw the ball off Clowney's helmet and the pass was picked off by Xavier Woods.

The Giants went conservative and it all started after Daniel Jones missed Malik Nabers on an easy throw that would have moved the chains and gotten even more. Brian Daboll opted to punt, pinning the Panthers at the 10, with a returning Jamie Gillan. But the Panthers struck back immediately, Bryce Young to Xavier Legette, and Carolina is on the move.

The Panthers have allowed 32.6 points per game this season. The Giants have scored 15.4 points per game.

Something has to give. Another thing to keep an eye on: the footing on the field surface, which is natural grass.

The pick: Giants 24, Panthers 17

Here's why: These last four games have shined a light on what they already knew: The Giants need a quarterback whose talent can go above the X’s and O’s. Right now it feels as if this offense with Daniel Jones has hit its ceiling, and scoring points is a grind. The running game was strong early against the Commanders, and rookie Tyrone Tracy Jr. continues to impress. The defense struggled to get off the field and needs to be better in key situations in order to maximize limited opportunities.

Bryce Young may have benefited from his time on the bench with Andy Dalton taking over. The Saints were so beaten down by losing to Carolina, they fired head coach Dennis Allen on Monday after New Orleans veterans like Cam Jordan fired off messages on social media questioning how they could lose to the Panthers. The defense played well against the Saints. RB Chuba Hubbard will look to expose the Giants, and rookie Jonathan Brooks could be in line to make his NFL debut in Germany.

The Giants are reeling and searching for answers. Brian Daboll’s team has stuff to figure out, and now they are caught in the tanking vortex: win games and improve your job status, get critics off your back, but in doing so, the quest to better draft status in the hunt for a franchise QB takes a hit. The Giants are undefeated in games in overseas, including the London game against the Packers two years ago in Daboll’s first season.
