Liverpool could make a late splash in the transfer market.
Liverpool have yet to sign a player this window, although Giorgi Mamardashvili's confirmation is expected soon. He will be Liverpool's first summer signing this window. However, whether or not the club will be done after that remains to be seen. Slot made it clear in a recent media conference that he is happy with his squad.
Things may be about to change, though, as the club is reportedly eyeing a late shock move for Juventus winger Federico Chiesa.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool have made first contact with Juventus over a potential Premier League move for Federico Chiesa. The Italian winger is reportedly keen to make a switch to England, and Juventus are expected to find a transfer solution for Chiesa before the window closes. Chiesa is no longer part of the project under manager Thiago Motta at Juventus and will almost certainly leave this window.
While Chiesa's stock certainly is not at the heights it once was at the 2020 Euros, the 26-year-old forward still has the chance to be a regular contributor at Liverpool under Arne Slot. Last season, Chiesa recorded ten goal contributions across all competitions. Chiesa is still a regular in the Italy National Team, with 51 appearances, tallying eight goals.
Federico Chiesa's ability to play on both wings will certainly be of interest to Slot, even if it is not necessarily an area the club is struggling to find suitable talent in. With the player frozen out of Juventus' squad and his contract expiring next year, it is unlikely Liverpool would be paying a massive fee for Chiesa.
Barcelona and Inter have been heavily linked to Chiesa in the past couple of weeks since his parent club made him available. With Liverpool interested in examining the conditions of a potential deal, we are likely to hear more in the coming days.
Liverpool has reportedly made initial contact with Juventus over a transfer that would bring Federico Chiesa to Anfield before the end of the summer window. It would bring to fruition a plan initially formulated by Jurgen Klopp.
According to Fabrizio Romano, an approach has been made as Liverpool explores the conditions for a potential Chiesa transfer. At present, the 26-year-old is no more than an "option" for the final days of the transfer market, but he is certainly under consideration.
In an agenda set by sporting director Richard Hughes, "opportunism" has been the theme of the summer so far for Arne Slot and his side. And Juventus is certainly willing to do business for Chiesa on terms that would likely be favorable, as it actively looks for a solution that would see him leave the club.
Circumstances could hardly be more different than when Chiesa first really cropped up on the Liverpool radar. The Italian was one of the breakout stars of Euro 2021, which saw him linked with a move to Anfield — but he had only been at Juventus for a season, and was halfway through a loan from Fiorentina that came with an agreement over a permanent transfer after two years.
There was nothing Liverpool could do to sign him then. But in fact, he had apparently been admired by Klopp for a lot longer than that, even if his name only exploded into the gossip columns later on.
Chiesa's Long-Held Appeal
A report in 2019 suggested that Liverpool had asked Fiorentina to name its price for Chiesa. At the time, Klopp was said to be "interested" in him and Nicolas Pepe, who ended up making an ill-fated move to Arsenal.
Chiesa's fortunes have been somewhat better than those of Pepe, although Liverpool would be getting a very different player to the one whom Klopp coveted. The Italian suffered a cruciate ligament tear in 2022, and has never quite been the same.
Once an explosive winger, worthy of Klopp's attentions as a possible Sadio Mane heir, Chiesa spent most of last season at Juventus as a kind of number 10 or shadow striker. It's interesting to think about how Slot might plan on deploying him.
Filling a Gap in the Squad
The most likely answer is that Chiesa would provide quality depth across the front line, and perhaps even in midfield. In that sense, then, it would be the completion of Klopp's long-held plan — with the Juventus man unlikely to have displaced Mane, Mohamed Salah or Roberto Firmino from the XI back in 2019.
Liverpool.com says: This would be an unexpected transfer. The Klopp-era version of Chiesa was highly appealing, but times have changed.
Then again, with Juventus seemingly very keen to sell, perhaps there's a bargain to be had. Chiesa is still only 26, and if Slot can unlock even half of the pre-injury player whom Klopp so admired, Liverpool will be doing well.
