A man has been convicted of killing a pensioner who died two months after he was punched in an “unjustified” attack at a social club.

Gary John Selwood, 59, was found guilty of manslaughter after the fatal attack on Paul Carter, 69, at the Whichurch Folk House in Bristol. Bristol Crown Court heard Selwood punched Mr Carter in an “unprovoked” and “unjustified” attack on the evening of Sunday, February 27, 2022.

As a result of being punched, Mr Carter fell backwards and struck his head on the corner of some furniture. He was knocked unconscious and suffered a bleed to the brain. He was taken to Southmead Hospital where he sadly died on Saturday, April 16.

Selwood was arrested the day after the incident in Bedminster on suspicion of assault, before being released under investigation. He later moved to France, where he was arrested in the Aulnay area on Sunday 26 March 2024 and extradited back to the UK by specialist officers.

The Impact of a Single Punch

The incident at the Whitchurch Folk House on February 27, 2022, resulted in a devastating ripple effect that impacted the lives of Paul Carter’s family and the community at large. It serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of violence, even when it appears to be a seemingly insignificant act.

The Family's Anguish

The family of Paul Carter, who were present in court for the verdict, expressed their profound devastation over the loss of their father. In their statement, they highlighted the immense pain and suffering they have endured in the wake of the attack. They shared their torment over the 48 days they spent by their father’s bedside, unsure of his recovery.

The family also expressed their deep sense of injustice, having to wait for almost two and a half years for Selwood’s return from France to face trial. They highlighted the emotional toll this extended waiting period took on their lives, leaving them in a state of limbo, unable to fully grieve the loss of their loved one.

A Legacy of Pain and a Plea for Justice

The family’s statement poignantly articulated the lasting impact of Selwood’s actions. They emphasized that while the verdict of guilty brought a sense of relief, it would not bring their father back. Their loss will continue to weigh heavily on them, a constant reminder of the senseless act that took their loved one away.

Their words also served as a powerful plea for others to reconsider their choices. They stressed the importance of taking responsibility for one’s actions and the potential consequences that can stem from violence, regardless of its initial appearance. Their message resonates with the importance of fostering a culture of empathy and understanding, urging individuals to consider the potential repercussions of their actions.

The Investigation and Trial

The conviction of Gary John Selwood was a culmination of a long and arduous investigation by the Major Crime Investigation Team. The police, working closely with the National Crime Agency and Interpol, successfully extradited Selwood from France to face trial in the UK.

Det Insp Mark Newbury, who led the investigation, emphasized the reckless nature of Selwood’s attack, highlighting the devastating consequences of his actions. He acknowledged the significant wait endured by Paul Carter’s family for justice, complicated by the extradition process. Newbury expressed hope that the conviction would bring some level of comfort to the grieving family.

The case has brought to light the complex process involved in seeking justice for victims of violent crimes. It highlights the critical role of law enforcement agencies in bringing perpetrators to account, even when they attempt to evade justice by fleeing to foreign countries. It also serves as a reminder of the tireless efforts of investigators in ensuring that victims and their families find a measure of closure.

A Warning Against Violence

Det Insp Newbury’s concluding remarks highlighted the case’s importance as a cautionary tale. He stressed the potentially disastrous consequences of even seemingly insignificant acts of violence. His message serves as a stark reminder that even a single punch can have life-altering repercussions, not only for the victim but also for the perpetrator and their families.

This case emphasizes the need for greater awareness of the dangers of violence and the importance of fostering a culture of respect and understanding. It underscores the need to address the root causes of violence and to promote conflict resolution strategies that prioritize peaceful resolutions.

A Call for Reflection

The conviction of Gary John Selwood for the manslaughter of Paul Carter is a stark reminder of the fragility of human life and the devastating impact of violence. This tragedy highlights the need for a collective effort to create a safer and more compassionate society, where violence is not tolerated and where the value of human life is held paramount. It calls for a renewed commitment to promoting peace, empathy, and understanding as the foundation for a more just and equitable world.

The tragic events of this case should not be viewed as a mere legal battle but as a catalyst for deeper reflection on our societal norms and values. We must actively work to address the underlying causes of violence and to create an environment where such tragedies can be prevented.

This case is a powerful reminder that every life holds intrinsic value and that violence, in any form, has the potential to shatter lives and inflict irreparable damage. We must strive to create a world where violence is not the answer and where all individuals are treated with respect and dignity.
