Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has been fined for speeding earlier this year. The England international isn’t the quickest in the heart of United’s defence whenever he plays, but The Sun reports that Maguire has been slapped with a £1,000 fine for speeding in his Land Rover.

Maguire was clocked by a traffic camera on the A616 in South Yorkshire doing 68mph in a 60mph zone. The centre-back admitted to the offence and pleaded guilty and his case was processed on Monday of this week, ahead of United’s 1-1 draw with FC Twente in their Europa League opener at Old Trafford. It wasn’t the result Erik ten Hag wanted as he started Maguire in defence alongside Lisandro Martinez.

Maguire was fined £670 on top of having three points added to his licence and his additional £268 victim surcharge and £90 in court costs, took a total of the fine to £1,028. After accepting wrongdoing, Maguire will now dust himself off and continue to work hard on the pitch for United. It’s something he will want to put behind him.

The £80 million defender arrived to Old Trafford in 2019 and has had a rollercoaster time of it at United. In six seasons, he has played 213 times for the club, scoring 11 goals. It seemed that his career was over at the club when he was stripped of the captaincy and almost sold to West Ham United in the summer of 2023. He has since fought back however and has become a rather dependable back up option for regular duo Matthijs De Ligt and Lisandro Martinez, already playing seven times this season.

Things are not so positive off the pitch however, as The Sun report that “Harry Maguire has been slapped with a £1,000 fine for speeding in his flash Land Rover.” He “was clocked by a traffic camera on the A616 in South Yorkshire doing 68mph in a 60mph zone.” The England international “triggered the monitor near his home city of Sheffield just before 2pm on March 7th”.

Maguire admitted to the offence and pleaded guilty and his case was processed on Monday of this week. He was fined £670, three points have been added to his license and an additional £268 victim surcharge and £90 in court costs, took the total of the fine to £1,028. This is not the first time a United player has got into hot water over their driving as his teammate Marcus Rashford is currently banned. Maguire will hope to put this behind him and continue to play a key role in United’s season, where they will hope to bounce back from last night’s disappointing Europa League draw with FC Twente in a blockbuster tie versus Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday evening.

Maguire's Difficult Period at Manchester United

The player has endured a difficult time at Old Trafford since joining the club in a record move. He has been in and out of the starting line-up and has been criticized by fans and pundits alike. The defender has looked like leaving the Red Devils a number of times in the past but his determination and perseverance has made him stay at the club and fight for his place.

Maguire's Off-Field Controversies

This is not the first time Maguire has been in trouble with the law. The centre-back was allegedly involved in a troublesome episode in Greece while on holiday. The Man United defender was found guilty of assaulting police officers, resisting arrest and attempted bribery, according to The Guardian. Activities off the pitch have not helped Maguire but he is not the only Man United star to be involved in controversies. Marcus Rashford and Antony have both been in trouble in recent seasons for their off the pitch activities.

Looking Ahead: Maguire's Focus on the Pitch

On the pitch, Maguire will now aim to move past this episode and focus on contributing to United’s campaign as they look to improve after a disappointing Europa League draw with FC Twente. The recent signing of Matthijs de Ligt seems to have cemented Maguire's position as a back-up player, but Maguire will still be aiming for first-team opportunities. With his future uncertain, Maguire's focus will be on proving his worth to the team and regaining the trust of the fans and the manager.
