The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has revealed that security agencies have identified a senator who allegedly sponsored protests in the nation’s capital. Wike, who disclosed this during a security council meeting in Abuja, noted that the unnamed senator provided food for the protesters. “We have information that a senator arranged for some security agencies to distribute food to the protesters,” Wike stated. “This is a clear case of sponsorship.” Wike added that at an appropriate time, security agencies would summon the senator to explain his involvement in these activities against the current government.

The minister also disclosed intelligence reports indicating that protesters intend to destroy public property on Friday. “Today, we saw attempts by some individuals to enter Eagle Square,” Wike noted. “While they didn’t succeed, we have information that they plan to cause property damage tomorrow, potentially leading to loss of lives.”

Wike emphasized that security agencies would not allow such actions. He urged protesters to use the MKO Abiola stadium for their demonstrations, as directed by the court. “We witnessed loss of lives in some states today. If such incidents occur in the FCT, it would draw significant criticism, especially with the international community conducting their businesses here,” he said.

Protests Continue Despite Wike's Warning

The protest is anticipated to continue on Friday. BusinessDay reports that on Thursday, a youth-led nationwide protest against the rising cost of living began.

However, a prominent social media critic, Martin Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, has refuted Wike’s claims, stating that the minister is attempting to bully protesters. Speaking moments before police teargassed protesters at the Berger Roundabout in Abuja on Friday, VeryDarkMan declared, “We are not dogs, we are not sheep. Wike cannot tell us where to go to the stadium to protest. Nigeria is our country, and it is our right to protest.”

He called on President Bola Tinubu to address them, emphasizing that they are not footballers who should be restricted to a stadium. He also warned protesters against violence, stating that he would personally hand over any protesters who caused any form of violence to the police.

Wike's Call for Dialogue

Amidst the ongoing protests, Wike has expressed the government's willingness to engage in dialogue with the protesters. He made this statement during the presentation of Staff of Office to the newly appointed graded Chiefs of the four Chiefdoms of Karu, Kwali, Pai and Yaba in the FCT.

Wike emphasized that the government is ready to listen to the protesters and walk them through governance issues they might not be aware of.

Senator's Alleged Sponsorship

Wike's accusation of a senator sponsoring the protests has sparked widespread interest and debate. Some see it as a tactic to discredit the protest movement, while others believe it warrants a thorough investigation. The identity of the senator remains undisclosed, leaving the public to speculate. The incident has highlighted the complex dynamics of power and protest in Nigeria, where political motives often intertwine with social movements.

Protesters Demand Action

The nationwide protest, which began on Thursday, has witnessed demonstrations in Abuja, Lagos, and other parts of the country. Protesters are demanding an end to hunger and bad governance, highlighting the economic and social challenges facing Nigerians. Their persistence underscores the growing public discontent and the need for effective solutions to address the underlying issues.

A Time for Dialogue and Action

As the protests continue, the call for dialogue and action resonates across the nation. While Wike's call for dialogue offers a potential path forward, concrete measures to address the grievances of the protesters are crucial. This includes tackling the rising cost of living, ensuring good governance, and fostering transparency and accountability. The success of any dialogue hinges on the government's willingness to listen, engage in meaningful discussions, and implement tangible solutions. The coming days will be crucial in determining the trajectory of these protests and the future of Nigeria's political landscape.
