Scotland is bracing for a period of strong winds and heavy rain, particularly in western parts of the country, as the Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning. The warning, which comes into effect on Thursday morning, from 1 am, and is set to be in place until 9 am, anticipates strong winds leading to some travel disruption.

Wind gusts of up to 60 mph are expected in some locations, with forecasters warning: "These gusts will be strong enough to blow over a few trees, given that they are currently in full leaf." The warning is in place across the country, taking in Central, Tayside and Fife regions, as well as the south west of Scotland, the Borders and regions across the Central belt and Strathclyde. Drivers are advised to check road conditions before heading out and people are being urged to check public transport schedules before embarking on any journey.

The Met Office has also issued a yellow weather warning for heavy rain, which is already in effect across Scotland. The warning, which is in place until 8 am on Thursday, anticipates as much as 75-100 mm of rain in some places, with Argyll and west Highland regions most affected by the spring tides. The main downpour is expected to last 24 hours. Affected areas can also expect gusts of up to 60 mph, which could result in dangerous coastal conditions.

Travel Disruption Expected

Scots are warned to be prepared for some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport. It’s likely that some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities will be affected by spray and/or large waves. Forecasters anticipate some bus and train services will be affected, with journeys taking longer. Some short term loss of power and other services is possible. Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges are likely.

Stay Safe During Stormy Weather

In the result of a power outage, it's a good idea to be prepared in advance for the worst case scenario. Keeping torches in the home alongside batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items. For those living near the coast, be advised rising tides could pose a risk to life. Even from the shore large breaking waves can sweep you off your feet and out to sea. Take care if walking near cliffs; know your route and keep dogs on a lead. In an emergency, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

Be Prepared for Changing Weather Conditions

The alert comes on the back of a yellow weather warning for rain which is in place across Scotland today (August 21). According to latest updates on its website, the yellow alert has been put back to 11 am after previously set to hit the country from 9 am. The end time has also been brought forward from 3 pm on Thursday afternoon to now end at 8 am. Be prepared for weather warnings to change quickly: when a weather warning is issued, the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the weather forecast in your area.

The Impact of Hurricane Ernesto

The Met Office reports: "A spell of very strong southwesterly winds will occur during the early hours of Thursday, easing from the west during the morning. Gusts of 50 mph are likely fairly widely with some gusts of 60 mph in exposed locations, including roads and bridges in north Wales, as well as roads passing over high ground in northern England and southern Scotland." The Met Office said remnants of Hurricane Ernesto, which ripped through the North Atlantic last week, will play a role in the rain and windy weather.

Advice for Coastal Communities

People on coastlines were urged to "stay safe" and to be "aware of large waves" while forecasters said the winds could bring travel disruption and power cuts. Forecasters said the weather could cause difficult driving conditions, travel disruption, flooding, and power cuts and urged people to "stay safe", particularly in coastal areas.

The Importance of Staying Informed

It is important to stay informed about the latest weather forecasts and warnings, and to take necessary precautions to ensure your safety. You can find the latest weather information on the Met Office website or app. Remember, it is always better to be safe than sorry.
