Jamie Lee Curtis is spending her Friday calling out paparazzi for sneaking photos from the “Freaky Friday” sequel set.
Curtis, who is reprising her original role alongside Lindsay Lohan for the highly-anticipated sequel to the iconic 2003 film, took to Instagram to clarify that the leaked pics from production are not indicative of the storyline for the feature, which is currently titled “Freakier Friday.”
“Because other outlets have posted it, I am going to take advantage of the intrusion of a paparazzi picture into the creative process of filmmaking,” Curtis wrote. “We have tried so hard to keep our story a secret and private until it’s time for release but once in a while an image comes out, and it doesn’t tell you anything about the story or about what’s going on with the characters but it does show the joy and fun that we had making ‘Freakier Friday’ and we know it will be the experience that you will have in the theaters next year.”
While Disney has not publicly announced plot details for “Freakier Friday,” Curtis did previously confirm that the story centers on her character being a grandmother to Lohan’s daughter. Of course, as per the first film, body-swapping will occur. Mark Harmon and Chad Michael Murray are both back for the sequel, along with new cast members Julia Butters, Manny Jacinto, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, and Sophia Hammons. Christina Vidal Mitchell, Haley Hudson, Lucille Soong, Stephen Tobolowsky, and Rosalind Chao also star.
“Late Night” director Nisha Ganatra is helming the film, which was announced earlier this year. The film has already wrapped production and is slated for a 2025 release.
Curtis shared in 2022 that she envisioned the storyline following three generations. “Let me be the grandma! Let me be the old grandma who switches places,” Curtis said. “So then Lindsay gets to be the sexy grandma, who is still happy with Mark Harmon in all the ways you would be happy with Mark Harmon. And simply, I would like to see Lindsay be the hot grandma, and I would like to see me try to deal with toddlers today. I wanna be a helicopter parent in today’s world, as an old lady.”
'Freakier Friday' Sequel Wraps Filming with a Sweet Embrace from the Stars
Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis are soaking up their final days together on the set of “Freakier Friday.”
Lohan, 38, was hard to miss in a short green wetsuit with a white-and-yellow floral pattern. Her wet red hair was slicked back into a bun for the fun day on the water.
Meanwhile, Curtis, 65, wore a full-length, black wetsuit and a pair of aviator sunglasses. Although the Oscar winner typically wears her gray hair short, she donned a shoulder-length wig for the scene.
On Thursday, the “Halloween” star announced she and Lohan were officially done shooting after a “little sleep,” “lots of laughs,” “a little blood, much sweat and copious tears.”
“It’s a WRAP! Mommy was up way effing past her bedtime,” she wrote alongside an Instagram selfie, noting that she was “thrilled to have been reunited” with Lohan.
The “Mean Girls” actress also commemorated the end of filming earlier this week, telling followers her “heart is so full.”
“It’s been such a great time making this film,” she wrote. “The wonderful cast, crew and everyone from @disneystudios have invested so much time and love into making this movie! Thank you to all of you! 🫶🙏”
The mother of one also gushed about how amazing it was to reconnect with Curtis, whom she first met while filming the hit 2003 comedy.
“I’m so grateful to have made this film, a story of family, mothers and their children and a film filled with love, laughter and a ton of heart,” she continued.
“It has been a pleasure to work with my dear friend @jamieleecurtis who brings so much joy to our set everyday and she has made this all the more special!”
'Freakier Friday' Stars Reflect on the 'Joy and Fun' of Filming the Sequel
Following the release of a number of paparazzi shots of filming on Freakier Friday, star Jamie Lee Curtis has taken the opportunity to post one of the shots herself, calling out the “intrusion” while continuing to highlight the “joy and fun” of her experience on the sequel.
“OK. Because other outlets have posted it, I am going to take advantage of the intrusion of a paparazzi picture into the creative process of filmmaking,” said Curtis, who posted a shot of her and co-star Lindsay Lohan embracing on the beach. “We have tried so hard to keep our story a secret and private until it’s time for release but once in a while an image comes out, and it doesn’t tell you anything about the story or about what’s going on with the characters but it does show the joy and fun that we had making #FREAKIERFRIDAY and we know it will be the experience that you will have in the theaters next year.”
Underscoring the distribution plans for the film, Curtis continued, “Yes, you heard me… The theaters. The place we all go and enjoy a shared experience in the dark while munching popcorn and candy and laughing together and sometimes crying together. Until then……. @lindsaylohan @disneystudios.”
Said Lohan, “I’m so grateful to have made this film, a story of family, mothers and their children and a film filled with love, laughter and a ton of heart! It has been a pleasure to work with my dear friend @jamieleecurtis who brings so much joy to our set everyday and she has made this all the more special!”
The Next Chapter of 'Freaky Friday'
Slated for release next year, Freakier Friday is the long-awaited follow-up to Freaky Friday, Disney‘s beloved 2003 comedy, which starred Lohan and Curtis as Anna and Tess, a mother and daughter who swap bodies after a mysterious incident involving a fortune cookie and get to experience life in one another’s shoes. Based on the same-name children’s book by Mary Rodgers, which was previously adapted into a 1976 film starring Barbara Harris and Jodie Foster, the film grossed over $160M worldwide and retains a passionate fan base to this day.
Boasting a multigenerational twist, Freaky Friday 2 picks up years after Tess and Anna’s body-swapping identity crisis, at a point when Anna has a daughter of her own and a soon-to-be stepdaughter. As the pair navigate the myriad challenges that come when two families merge, mother and daughter discover that lightning might indeed strike twice.
Original cast members set to return include Chad Michael Murray, Mark Harmon, Christina Vidal Michell, Haley Hudson, Lucille Soong, Stephen Tobolowsky and Rosalind Chao. Newcomers, meanwhile, include Manny Jacinto, Sophia Hammons, Julia Butters, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan and Jordan E. Cooper.
Nisha Ganatra (Late Night) directed from a script by Jordan Weiss, with the original film’s Andrew Gunn producing alongside Kristin Burr and Curtis. Nathan Kelly, Ann Marie Sanderlin, and Lohan served as executive producers.
