Rocksteady Studios is currently facing a dark period following the resounding failure of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. So how do they get back in the spotlight? If you ask any fan of the studio, the answer will be clear: it's time to go back to Batman games, the only ones that have truly made their mark on the studio's history. And surprise, it could be happening behind the scenes!
It's Nick Baker, from Xbox Era, who dropped this information on X. For those unfamiliar, Baker is often a reliable source with numerous correct leaks, even if he sometimes gets things wrong. This time, he claims Rocksteady is back on Batman games, and that Sony might be trying to infiltrate the project.
We're talking about “moneyhatting” here. Basically, it's the use of financial incentives or “pushes” to gain a competitive edge, often in favor of exclusive games.
So, a PS5 or even PS6 exclusive? Nothing is confirmed yet, but if Sony invests money, it's probably to secure at least a temporary exclusivity. And if the project is real, you'll have to be patient: a release on PS6 is not out of the question, especially since Rocksteady took nine years to release Suicide Squad after their last game.
It remains to be seen, but in the meantime, Batman fans can dream of a comeback on PlayStation consoles.
The Batman Arkham saga has been sidelined in favor of Gotham Knights and Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League. However, it could be making a grand comeback soon.
There are franchises that have such an aura that it's hard to understand why they've disappeared from the video game landscape. The Batman Arkham saga clearly falls into this category, having carved out a fine reputation with its main trilogy. Rumors were swirling about the successor to Knightfall and the direction Rocksteady was taking, but the studio ultimately opted for the game service turn with Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League, to no great success. There will be a new game, but it's far from what fans were hoping for. Batman Arkham Shadow will indeed be destined for VR and developed by another studio. However, it seems that Rocksteady is finally ready to return to its first loves.
Batman Arkham Shadow will therefore immerse aspiring detectives in a more realistic Gotham City than ever before. A virtual reality title that aims to be the most immersive in the franchise to date, but few fans will be able to enjoy it. In addition to being intended for VR players, it is also exclusively reserved for owners of a Meta Quest 3. What the community hopes for, however, is the return of the franchise in a big way, with a single-player game like the trilogy that gave Rocksteady its letters of nobility. There was indeed a new episode featuring Damian Wayne by WB Montreal, but it was canceled. However, after the debacle of Suicide Squad Kill, the studio would have returned to the drawing board.
That's at least what insider Nick Baker claims. According to him, Rocksteady would be working on the Batman Arkham franchise again. Everything suggests that the developers have gone back to a solo production after biting off more than they could chew with the game-service expanses. On the other hand, again, not everyone would be able to enjoy it. According to him, Sony would indeed be ready to put its hand in its pocket to make it a PS5 or PS6 exclusive.
For its part, Warner Bros Games has a desire for multiplayer productions. The publisher has explained that it is ready to rent out its licenses to achieve its goals. After the immense success of Hogwarts Legacy, the American giant could have found the perfect compromise by giving Batman Arkham fans what they want and outsourcing other developers for the rest. All this is obviously to be taken with a grain of salt, knowing that the insider's reputation has not always been rosy, despite more proven leaks lately.
The founder of XboxEra, @Shpeshal_Nick, said that Rocksteady is working on a new Batman game, not a remaster or remake of previous installments in the series.
He also added that Sony is trying to get money on this project, and so the game could become a PlayStation exclusive.
While such rumors should be taken with a grain of salt, I want to believe that Rocksteady will return to the formula of previous superhero games and will not repeat the result of Suicide Squad.
