Tesla has opened another new Supercharger in Canada this month, this time in Langley, British Columbia. This is also the first V4 Supercharger in Canada, and while it offers the same speeds as V3 Superchargers, there is another benefit for non-Tesla EV drivers.
A Look at Tesla's V4 Superchargers
Tesla first debuted its V4 Superchargers in March 2023 in the Netherlands, later expanding through much of Europe with additional installations. The latest in Supercharger technology didn’t reach North America until about 8 months later with the first installation appearing in Oregon.
The Arrival of V4 Superchargers in Canada
Canada had to wait a little longer, with the first V4 Superchargers posts added in April of this year in Langley, BC. However, the site sat idle for nearly five months, but after promising to open it in August, Tesla followed through with one day to spare.
A New Supercharger Experience
On Thursday night the Langley Supercharger at the Riocan Langley Centre (20090 Langley Bypass) was turned on. It is one of the cheapest Superchargers in Canada at $0.21/kWh for Tesla owners, and $0.26 for non-Tesla owners.
Charging Speeds and Capabilities
As we noted, this site will offer the same 250kW charging speeds as V3 Superchargers. That is because Tesla is still building these sites with the same cabinets that power V3 posts. As a result, Tesla actually refers to these as V3.5 Superchargers.
Benefits for Non-Tesla Drivers
For now, the added benefit of the new V4 posts is the longer charging cable, which allows non-Tesla EV owners to more easily plug in with their NACS adapter.
More V4 Superchargers on the Horizon
The second V4 (V3.5) Supercharger in Canada should also be opening very soon in Kananaskis, Alberta, which Tesla was also aiming to turn on this month.
The Future of Electric Vehicle Charging in Canada
The opening of the first V4 Supercharger in Canada marks a significant milestone for the electric vehicle industry in the country. It demonstrates Tesla's commitment to expanding its charging network and making it more accessible to all EV drivers. As Tesla continues to roll out V4 Superchargers across Canada, we can expect to see more convenient and affordable charging options available to EV owners. The introduction of longer charging cables is a clear indication that Tesla is listening to feedback from drivers and striving to create a more user-friendly charging experience. It remains to be seen how these new charging stations will impact the overall EV adoption rate in Canada, but the availability of more accessible and efficient charging options is sure to play a significant role in the future of electric mobility in the country.
