Former world champion boxer Amir Khan is planning to sell his new events venue in his Bolton hometown, three months after its launch. He posted on the X platform on Thursday that he was “looking to sell my wedding hall for £12.5 million”.

The Balmayna venue, which includes a car park for 200 vehicles and palm trees, has drawn both praise for local investment and complaints. Critics said the 800-capacity premises looked out of place in Washington Street, surrounded by houses and vehicle maintenance firms.

On Balmayna’s social media profile, the four-floor premises is described as a “luxury wedding and events venue” and is said to be “the brainchild of Amir Khan” on its official website.

Khan, who rose to fame at the age of 17 after winning an Olympic silver medal, invested in the property along with local businessman Mohammad Jaberansari. Planning permission for the project was granted in 2013 but various setbacks led to costs spiralling, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

Mr Jaberansari recently told a licensing panel he had spent £6m while Khan “spent £10m on this project”, as they tried to improve the area and recruit about 100 venue staff. “These sorts of venues - you normally expect them near London, not in Bolton, but I would rather invest in my hometown,” Mr Jaberansari said.

Khan posted about the venue’s opening in June, saying it came “after blood, sweat and tears”. The BBC has contacted his representatives for a comment.

Amir Khan has put his luxury wedding venue in Bolton up for sale just three months after hosting its first ever marriage. The boxing icon purchased the £11.5million lavish 'Dubai-style' tower, which features glass walls, a waterfall and palm trees inside, earlier this year, a few months before welcoming its first wedding in May.

But despite its exotic appearance, the venue, named 'The Balmayna', sits nextdoor to an auto body shop and car wash in the heart of Bolton, and back in January it was surrounded by heaps of junk including broken fridges, settees and dirty mattresses.

But in a sudden u-turn, Khan, 37, who once aspired to host boxing events at the venue, is now inviting bidders to take it off his hands.

'I am looking to sell my wedding hall for £12.5 million. The property features four floors, including three dedicated wedding floors and a rooftop events terrace,' he wrote on X.

'Additionally, there is parking available at both the front and rear, accommodating up to 200 vehicles.' He invited interested parties to get in touch with him over email.

Work on the Washington Street site took far longer than expected as it was dogged by delays. Reports place his investment in it between £5m and £12.5m. with

'The Balmayna' opened with a bang in May as the venue's first-ever bride and groom celebrated their big day in style. Videos showed guests being serenaded by violins in front of palm trees and eating fruit canapes served by staff in bow ties, as they watched the bride arrive on a horse-drawn carriage and the groom in a Rolls Royce.

Just a couple of months in advance of the wedding, pictures showed the venue's grand chandelier hanging from a corrugated metal roof near a smoke alarm and cables.

But images from the event showed how staff had quickly managed to fix these issues, as the building's lavish marble floors and chandeliers were on display for all guests to see.

A Balmayna spokesperson said: 'The first love story at the Balmayna. So elegant, so magical, simply a dream. We wish our bride and groom the most happiest of blessings. Such a stunning backdrop for your memories.'

A group of musicians welcomed guests and the happy couple during the Balmayna's first wedding on Saturday, May 18

The former light-welterweight world champion blamed the delays on 'unprofessional management'.

The building's design has divided opinions with one fan likening it to one in Dubai, where Khan partly resides, and others comparing it to looking like the Premier League trophy.

At the start of the year, those who lived in the area were far from happy with the design, with one person writing on Instagram: 'It's an absolute eyesore!!!! A blot on the landscape!!! It's a huge lack of class! It also doesn't look anything at all like the image portrayed.'

In January, broken fridges, settees and dirty mattresses were seen dumped by fly-tippers around the venue. While mounds of household rubbish lay strewn across the streets leading up to the imposing structure.

Chunks of rendering are already missing from the walls encasing the building, along with damaged brickwork at the entrance to the venue.

Local resident Georgina Pickering added: 'It looks a mess at the moment with all the rubbish around the sides and walls but that will all be gone by the time it opens.

One man said: 'My fiance is looking at potential wedding venues at the moment but this won't be on her list'

'The building is massive - like a giant greenhouse, the like of which you'd see in Dubai - and does look odd next to everything else around here but it's an improvement on what used to be there.'

But local Iqbal Azal, 40, said: 'I don't mind it. Yes, it is big and loud but at least Amir is trying to improve the area.'

Before its grand unveiling, the Balmayna's Instagram page gushed with excitement.

'With immense joy, the wait is nearly over! We will soon unveil the grand opening of@thebalmayna, Bolton's newest wedding haven,' a post read.

'A splendid project between Excellency Midlands and Amir Khan, where elegance seamlessly meets excellence.'

Khan stated on X:

“I am looking to sell my wedding hall for £12.5 million. The property features four floors, including three dedicated wedding floors and a rooftop events terrace. Additionally, there is parking available at both the front and rear, accommodating up to 200 vehicles. Interested parties may contact me via email at [email protected].”

After putting it up for sale, the retired athlete wrote:

“I would like to clarify that although I am in the process of selling the property, The Balmayna continues to operate without interruption. The business is flourishing, experiencing significant demand for weddings and events, and our schedule is rapidly filling with bookings extending into 2026. All operations and reservations will proceed as intended.”

Planning permission for the hotel construction came in 2013:

Meanwhile, Khan had invested in the property along with local businessman Mohammad Jaberansari. Although the planning permission had come in 2013, the project experienced numerous setbacks, according to various developments.

They had spent a whopping £10m on its construction. Jaberansari said, as quoted by BBC:

“These sorts of venues - you normally expect them near London, not in Bolton, but I would rather invest in my hometown.”

AMIR KHAN has placed a whopping £12.5million price tag on his luxury wedding venue in Bolton.

The boxing icon made the announcement about the “Dubai-Style” venue on social media in the early hours of Friday morning.

In his post, the 37-year-old said: “I am looking to sell my wedding hall for £12.5m.

“The property features four floors, including three dedicated wedding floors and a rooftop events terrace.

“Additionally, there is parking available at both the front and rear, accommodating up to 200 vehicles.”

A follow up tweet added: “I would like to clarify that although I am in the process of selling the property, The Balmayna continues to operate without interruption.

“The business is flourishing, experiencing significant demand for weddings and events, and our schedule is rapidly filling with bookings extending into 2026.

“All operations and reservations will proceed as intended.”

Named “The Balmayna, the stunning venue is located in Bolton opposite a car wash and fly-tipping spot, which had left it within touching distance of broken fridges and dirty mattresses in January.

Khan had once aspired to hold boxing events there, but now it appears he is happy to cash in on that dream after inviting interested parties to get in touch by email.

Reports have placed the construction of the hall on Washington Street in Deane at as high a price as £14m, though Khan's wife Faryal Makhdoom has claimed the couple spent £15m on the project.

The banquet hall of the site - which first gained planning permission in 2013 but was dogged by delays - stands at 44,700 sq ft, with the first glamorous wedding there being held in May.

Former unified light-welterweight world champion Khan had spoken of his excitement following the debut event, telling Place North West: “It’s a great feeling obviously, the wedding hall is now open and had its first wedding.

“The booking sheet is full now and so many people are calling. I think there will be more interest and I truly believe it is one of the best wedding venues in the country and I believe it will do well.”

However, one local resident told The Sun: “I’m also worried it might lead to too much traffic.

“It is a concern because lots of families have more than one car and we have parking problems already.

“It’s an odd place to build such an extravagant wedding venue for hundreds of guests.”

Another resident said she had no choice but to keep her windows closed last Saturday to shut out the noise.

Rampant fly-tipping - with Bolton hitting a record number of incidents in 2023 - around the hall left Khan's wife furious during the latter stages of the build.

Speaking to The Bolton News in May 2023, she said: “We are trying to make Bolton a better place.

“We’re building a huge wedding hall and have spent £15m on it.

“Amir could have chosen any place, but he chose Bolton because it’s his hometown.

“We’re building a nice site so it’s really sad to see that people are still leaving junk and things around and every time we pick it up and clean the area, the same thing happens again.

“So, we’re trying to do something for the community and people are not helping. I want to say from myself and Amir to keep Bolton clean and try to help it like we are.”

Khan has hinted he could make his boxing comeback in a blockbuster fight with YouTuber-turned-boxer KSI.

He was originally supposed to return in 2022, but failed a drugs test on the night of the fight and was forced to serve a two-year suspension in retirement with his argument of not knowingly taking the prohibited substance being accepted.

This comes after the venue won a fight for a late-night licence last month.

His business partners, Excellency Plaza, had applied to Bolton Council on May 20 for it to be allowed to open until half past midnight.

It offers luxury dining, chauffeur service, musicians, a shisha bar rooftop and more, with two wedding halls.
